Sovannaphumi School, Kampot I Scholarship Candidate Profile: Sopen

Sopen is a 12-year-old student currently completing Grade 6 and preparing to enter Grade 7 in September. She has been studying English with us for over a year while also attending public school, and throughout that time she has shown excellent attendance, consistency, and dedication to her education.
Sopen comes from a farming family facing significant financial hardship. Despite living far from the school, her parents make the effort every Monday through Friday to bring not only Sopen, but also several other family members, to attend English classes. Their consistency and commitment to education have been truly remarkable.

As the middle child of three siblings, Sopen has grown up understanding both responsibility and perseverance. Her older brother left school in Grade 7 to become a monk, while her younger brother is also currently studying English with us. Like many rural Cambodian families, continuing education beyond primary school is financially difficult, and many students are forced to leave school early.

Because our program currently ends after Grade 6, Sopen will no longer be able to continue studying with us once she enters Grade 7 and begins attending school full-time in September. This makes finding a sponsor for her especially urgent.

We believe Sopen is exactly the kind of student a scholarship program is meant to support — hardworking, committed, kind, and determined despite difficult circumstances. She has made meaningful progress in her English studies and has shown a level of dedication that stands out among her peers.

Among our current scholarship nominations, Sopen’s family represents one of the greatest levels of financial need we have encountered so far. Yet even in difficult circumstances, they continue to prioritize education every single day.
A sponsor for Sopen would not simply be helping one student continue school. They would be helping create opportunity and stability for an entire family that deeply values education but struggles financially to continue it.

We are still urgently looking for a sponsor for Sopen. She will soon be graduating from Grade 6, which means she will be required to discontinue her studies with us here at Sala Monkey.

Once she begins Grade 7 in the public secondary school system, students are required to attend full-time, making it impossible for her to continue her studies at Sala Monkey without additional scholarship support.

Please meet Lyhour!

🎓 Lyhour is currently a Grade 4 student and, in the upcoming school year beginning September 1st, she will be entering Grade 5.
Lyhour has been a student at Sala Monkey Language and Arts School for the past few years, since 2023. During this time, she has shown steady and meaningful growth in both her academic abilities and personal development. She is currently part of our lower-level English class and has made clear progress over the past year, demonstrating increased effort, confidence, and engagement in her learning 📚✨.

In addition to her academics, Lyhour is an active member of both our Khmer dance team 💃 and ballet group 🩰. Through participation in the arts program, she has developed significantly in confidence, teamwork, and self-expression. Dance has played an important role in helping her become more outgoing and motivated, and she continues to grow in confidence both inside and outside the classroom 🌟.

Lyhour comes from a hardworking family with both a younger and older sibling. Her younger sibling currently attends our Pre-K program at Sala Monkey. Her father works as a welder 🔧, and her mother works in a factory in Phnom Penh.

We believe this scholarship opportunity would greatly elevate Lyhour’s academic future and provide her with expanded educational opportunities that may otherwise be out of reach. She is a kind, hardworking, and deserving student with strong potential for continued growth and success 🌱.

Sopen comes from a farming family with significant financial need (they receive assistance through a government "poverty card." Even though they live far from the school, her parents faithfully bring Sopen and other family members to study English with us Monday through Friday. Education is clearly something this family deeply values, despite the challenges they face.
She is the middle child of three siblings. Her older brother left school in Grade 7 to become a monk, and her younger brother is also currently studying English with us.
Because our program ends after Grade 6, Sopen will soon transition into full-time secondary school, making this an urgent time to secure sponsorship support for her continued education at Sovannaphumi School, Kampot I. Her current student ranking at public school is #17 out of the 53 students in her class.
