BREAKING: US President Donald Trump urges Cambodia, Thailand to respect ceasefire after Thai military launches airstrikes

(WASHINGTON): US President Donald Trump has urged Cambodia and Thailand to fully respect their ceasefire commitments after a renewed border dispute between the two countries, Reuters reported.

The Thai military launched airstrikes on Cambodia on Monday, a violation of a ceasefire and a threat to a joint statement on peace signed by the two countries in October in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, witnessed by US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

A senior Trump administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said on Monday, Dec. 8, “President Trump is committed to continuing the cessation of violence and hopes that the governments of Cambodia and Thailand will fully respect their commitments to ending the conflict.”

President Xi Jinping attended the closing ceremony of the Seventh Meeting of the China-France Business Council with French President Emmanuel Macron and delivered remarks.

This year, China and France have entered the second 60 years of diplomatic relations. The two countries are expanding economic and trade cooperation to more areas and enhancing its resilience.

The two sides should renew the original aspiration for establishing diplomatic relations, seize opportunities to deepen cooperation, and work for the steady and sustained growth of bilateral relations. Together, the two countries will jointly open up a more splendid chapter in cooperation and address the uncertainty in today’s world with the stability of China-France relations.

📰Cambodia Reports Decline in Violence Against Women During Talks With Australia
— Cambodia’s minister of women’s affairs reported a decline in violence against women, from 29% in 2014 to 21% in 2022, during a meeting with Australia’s ambassador for gender equality.

Ung Kantha Phavy met with Ambassador Michelle O’Byrne in a courtesy meeting to exchange experiences and strengthen cooperation on gender equality policies.

Discussions focused on preventing gender-based violence, including online abuse, women’s economic empowerment and the Women, Peace and Security agenda.

Ung Kantha Phavy attributed the decline to collaboration among government ministries and partner organizations, citing multisectoral services, legal protections, training for law enforcement and judicial personnel, and livelihood support for survivors.

She highlighted Cambodia’s leadership in developing a regional action plan on Women, Peace and Security, tools for localizing WPS at the community level and a national WPS situation analysis. Cambodia plans to adopt its first national action plan on WPS in 2026.

The minister expressed concern over the rise of digital gender-based violence, describing it as an increasingly prevalent form of abuse.

O’Byrne welcomed the discussion, noting that Australia faces similar challenges and shared the country’s response strategies, pledging ongoing cooperation.

Ung Kantha Phavy also announced that Cambodia will inaugurate a Women’s Economic and Entrepreneurship Development Centre on Dec. 3, 2025, to serve as a national hub supporting women’s economic empowerment and business development.
