What a fantastic Sunday morning spent with our plant community!

Today, we gathered for Urban Canopy Phnom Penh’s monthly meetup focused on a vital urban challenge: Urban Canopy Cover to Mitigate the Urban Heat Island (UHI) Effect.

Here’s a snapshot of what we explored today:

🚶‍♂️ 𝐅𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝 𝐎𝐛𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 & 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐤: Led by Savatey Ang, we walked through historical Wat Phnom to explore its spatial design and rich ecological heritage.

🌡️ 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐔𝐇𝐈 𝐒𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 & 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐤: Haingveang Taing and Chansovichea Duch led an engaging session on microclimates and tree canopies as critical cooling infrastructure, featuring an interactive walking observation from Wat Phnom to Canadia Garden along Norodom Blvd.

💬 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 & 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐋𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡: We dedicated extra time to an open forum sharing ideas for future meetups, exchanging perspectives on urban greening, and officially welcoming new members into the Urban Canopy Phnom Penh Chapter of Urban Canopy Cambodia.

This Month's Focus: 𝐔𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐩𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐌𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭

We'll kick off our inaugural meetup with a field visit to Wat Phnom on Sunday, August 2nd, 2026 from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM. Join us as we explore the power of urban forests and learn how increasing canopy cover can significantly cool down our city and fight climate change. This topic is especially critical as part of the global FXB Climate Advocate initiative, which focuses on using climate mitigation as a primary tool to combat environmental challenges. 🌳💨
