Our expedition to experience how cutting-edge architecture seamlessly implements nature brought us straight to the National Gallery Singapore.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬: Adaptive Reuse, Historic Preservation, and Climate-Responsive Architecture

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐚 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬:
The National Gallery is a brilliant lesson in adaptive reuse, the practice of repurposing historic structures rather than tearing them down to build new ones. By uniting two historic national monuments (the former City Hall and Supreme Court), the architects dramatically reduced the project's embodied carbon (the carbon footprint associated with manufacturing and transporting new building materials).

𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬:
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐮𝐦 𝐕𝐞𝐢𝐥: A contemporary, concaved glass-and-steel roof structure elegantly joins the two heritage buildings. This veil acts as a solar filter, flooding the interior with soft, natural daylight while minimizing solar heat gain (the heat buildup from the sun), which significantly reduces air conditioning loads.

𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐯𝐬. 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲: It perfectly demonstrates how 20th-century heritage architecture can be seamlessly integrated with 21st-century energy-efficient HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems without destroying historic integrity.

We are looking for 3 enthusiastic interns to join our Global-Local Design Initiative (GLDI) in the Sustainable Design Academy (SDA). If you have strong foundational skills, outstanding knowledge, and a drive to learn, we would love to welcome you!

- Learn side-by-side with an experienced consultant in a supportive, collaborative environment.
- Help us research and adapt global climate-responsive standards for Cambodia.
- Get behind-the-scenes exposure to our upcoming 3-month masterclasses and technical site visits.

🎯 𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐖𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐨𝐫:
🇰🇭 Cambodian nationals currently living in Phnom Penh.
🗣️ Bilingual skills: Good command of both Khmer and English (for research and communication).

No professional experience required! We highly value candidates with strong university projects, outstanding technical knowledge, and great design tool skills (AutoCAD, SketchUp, Adobe, Canva etc.). For students or recent graduates in Architecture, Urban Design, Landscape Design, Interior Design or related fields.

📅 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐃𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐬 & 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬:

- Commitment: 5–10 hours per week (Flexible | 3 or 6 months)
- Start Date: June 20, 2026
- Interview: Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for an informal Zoom interview within 48 hours of applying.
