We are pleased to share with you a new publication from our faculty members on urban retrofitting to mitigate flooding in response to a typical land-use/land-cover change in central Phnom Penh, published by CamTech University Press.
Findings:
The inherent characteristics of each land-use type influenced the performance of individual GI features. In the two typical land uses in Phnom Penh, commercial (COM) and mixed residential-commercial (MIX) land uses, permeable pavements emerged as the most applicable GI features, as they could be applied to four land covers: sidewalks, streets, parking lots, and other land uses. Conversely, bioswales demonstrated limited applicability, as their implementation was limited to boulevards and parking lots, which together represent a small share of impervious surfaces. Trees and green roofs were the second and third-most applicable features of the combined GI features, respectively. Overall, the combined GI features covered more than half of the total area at both sites, resulting in runoff reductions of 48.86% and 38.82% for sites COM and MIX, respectively.
This study demonstrates the high performance of green Infrastructure (GI) features integration, such as trees, permeable pavements, bioswales, and green roofs, as a retrofit approach for mitigating urban floods across different land-use/land-cover in central Phnom Penh. To scale up optimal GI performance for runoff reduction in tropical climates, other features such as retention ponds, constructed wetlands, detention ponds, rain gardens, and rainwater harvesting can reduce runoff volume during intense monsoon rains. These features can be combined with distributed and centralized retention strategies to manage both frequent nuisance floods and extreme events, while providing multiple environmental, social, and economic benefits.
Future research: To quantify the optimal mix of GI and retention for different land-use types and develop design guidelines for integrated green-gray infrastructure in Phnom Penh.

Design Studio 04: Residential Architecture
Department of Architecture and Interior Design, Faculty of Sustainable Built Environment

Final Project Presentation

β€œKeeping students motivated and passionate about design is the primary objective of the design studio. Through the design process, students discover their language by continuously working toward satisfying both the client’s needs and their own aspirations. Ultimately, the process is more important than the final outcome."

" Architecture is more about exploration and experimentation.”

We are proud to launch our first "Graduation Project Magazine," compiled and designed by our inaugural architecture batch and advised by our faculty members. Initiated to fulfill the university's vision and mission, this book features a collection of summaries from our students' fourth-year graduation projects and will be available in hard copy shortly.
Read the full magazine here:https://camtech.edu.kh/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Graduation-Project-2025.pdf

The graduation project is a research-driven, problem-based study of the built environment, focusing on real-world issues in architecture, urbanism, and society. The emphasis remains on sustainable solutions rather than project scale. To ensure their findings met their objectives, students employed diverse methodologies, including site surveys, interviews, literature reviews, and mapping. Over a five-to-eight-month period of full-time study, projects were guided by faculty members through a structured supervision timeline. Notably, several of these projects have been awarded, and some are currently being prepared for local or international publication.
Happy Valentine's Day!
