Though we mourn in grief, we also celebrate the life of a great scholar, Prof. Wilson Cheruiyot Kipruto, whose dedication to academia profoundly shaped and inspired countless young minds.

As Kenya continues to expand gold and critical mineral exploration, conversations around mine safety are becoming more important than ever.

We are proud to celebrate Eng. Khadija Said Omar, a faculty member in the School of Mines and Engineering at Taita Taveta University and a distinguished alumna, who has been featured in The Standard for her groundbreaking research on the use of Artificial Intelligence in predicting and preventing mining hazards.

Through her research at Pennsylvania State University, Eng. Said demonstrates that mine collapses, radiation exposure, and battery fires are not simply “sudden accidents” They are predictable physical processes. With AI-powered monitoring and control systems, mines can:

Detect risks early

Prevent catastrophic failures

Transition from reactive responses to predictive safety systems

This is the direction of intelligent, sustainable mining — and it’s inspiring to see our alumni leading from the front.

Congratulations, Eng. Said, for proudly representing the School of Mines and Engineering and placing TTU on the global map. Your work continues to inspire the entire alumni community.

Since its establishment, the Taita Taveta University Alumni Association (TTUAA) has steadily grown into a vibrant and impactful community, delivering meaningful programs that connect alumni, support students, and give back to society. Some of the key milestones and initiatives include:

Alumni Dinner Gala (2019, Nairobi):
The Association hosted its inaugural Alumni Dinner Gala in Nairobi, bringing together TTU alumni from diverse professional backgrounds. The event provided a valuable networking platform and officially marked the launch of TTUAA.

First Alumni Bursary Award Ceremony:
TTUAA successfully awarded tuition bursaries to over 150 needy students, easing their financial burden and enabling them to continue with their studies.

Establishment of the TTUAA Office:
The Association set up a fully functional alumni office at the main campus, complete with secretarial support. This office now serves as the central point for handling alumni affairs in a professional and efficient manner.

Second Alumni Bursary Award Ceremony:
More than 100 students benefited from the second bursary program. The ceremony was presided over by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Fred Barasa, underscoring the University’s support for the initiative.

First Mega Alumni Career Day:
TTUAA organized its first major career day, bringing in alumni professionals from sectors such as Business, Agriculture, Mining, and Statistics. Students gained mentorship, career guidance, and opportunities to network with industry experts.

Tree Planting and Environmental Conservation Initiative:
In collaboration with alumni, staff, students, and environmental organizations, TTUAA led a tree-planting exercise at the Mwamusha Catchment Area, a critical water source for the University and surrounding community. Over 5,000 trees were planted, fostering environmental conservation and strengthening community–alumni–University ties. Plans are underway for the second phase of this CSR initiative.

Annual Alumni Dinner for Finalists:
Each year, TTUAA hosts a special dinner for finalist students, combining career mentorship with networking opportunities. Finalists engage with accomplished alumni, learn about life after graduation, and are introduced to their roles and responsibilities within the alumni community.

Career and Job Search Mentorship for Fresh Graduates:
Through online platforms, alumni consistently mentor fresh graduates, guiding them on job searching, career growth, and navigating the competitive employment landscape.

Launch of the School of Mines and Engineering Alumni Chapter:
The Alumni Chapter was officially launched in a ceremony presided over by the Principal Secretary for Mining. The chapter is currently in its final stages of member verification and constitutional amendments.

Partnership with the TTU Endowment Fund:
TTUAA partnered with the University’s Endowment Fund and established a bursary kitty through which the Association will channel its bursary allocations. This partnership strengthens resource mobilization to support the growing number of needy students.

Participation in TTU CSR Activities:
The Association actively took part in the TTU Endowment Fund Battlefield Run as one of the key sponsors. The initiative aimed at raising funds to support needy students, as well as enhancing University infrastructure and research facilities in the long term.

Planned Establishment of a TTUAA Benevolent Fund:
TTUAA is in the process of establishing a Benevolent Fund to support members during difficult times, such as serious illness requiring specialized medical care or bereavement. The fund will also explore other sustainable initiatives for the long-term welfare of alumni.

We are also working towards engaging more alumni to build a broad, inclusive, and strong platform that brings together all TTU graduates. This will enable the Association to share real-time updates on alumni activities and University events, ensuring no one is left out.

As part of this effort,we encourage all alumni to stay connected by following and engaging with our official social media pages on Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn, all under the name TTU Alumni Association. These platforms will serve as key channels for communication, networking and active participation in alumni activities.

Through these initiatives, TTUAA will continue to strengthen alumni engagement, support students, and contribute positively to the University and the wider community.
