At the peace tournament finals in Yuzu Park, Kakuma 1, Department of Refugee Affairs officer Jesus Lotim urged young people to avoid crime and violence and focus on building a better future. He also highlighted UNHCR plans to repair 11 roads in the camp by the end of May, with youth set to benefit through paid work opportunities.

While speaking to a large gathering of youth during the peace tournament finals held last week at Yuzu Park in Kakuma 1, Department of Refugee Affairs, field officer, Jesus Lotim encouraged young people in Kakuma to avoid crime and insecurity. He noted that UNHCR intends to rehabilitate 11 roads in the camp by the end of May and that youth will be employed and paid to participate in the works if they take up the opportunity. Lotim also encouraged young people to spend their time productively by engaging in community organisations, peacebuilding activities, and sports.

Girls in Kakuma are finding their voice and potential through sports, despite cultural barriers, limited support and lack of safe spaces, showing that with opportunity they can grow, compete and succeed.

The Peace Tournament finals in Kakuma 2 between Eldu FC and 1341 FC ended goalless after 90 minutes. The match went to a penalty shootout, and 1341 FC held their nerve to lift the trophy.
In Kakuma 1, Home Boyz and Rangers also played out a draw. Rangers stepped up in the shootout and took the trophy home.
Rangers FC player, Kiir said Home Boyz came determined to win, but found things are different on the pitch. He said Rangers refused to give up until they lifted the trophy.
Each of 24 participating teams in the Peace tournament received a ball, a set of uniforms for each of the two winning teams.
The chairman of Youth Voice and Action, Andrea Monybuny, thanked partner organisations, especially the Danish Refugee Council for their support. He called on them to do even more for the youth in Kakuma.
Abraham, a peacebuilding officer with DRC, said Sports for Peace is one of the events that DRC has identified that can be used to promote peace.
