📊 Core Mathematics vs Essential Mathematics
🧠 Core Mathematics
Who takes it:
Learners in the STEM pathway (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics) are expected to take Core Mathematics because it provides the stronger mathematical foundation needed for science and technology-related careers.
What it focuses on:
Deeper mathematical concepts including advanced reasoning, algebra, geometry, statistics and problem-solving skills.
Designed to prepare students for fields like engineering, data science, medicine, computing, architecture, and other courses that require a solid math background.
Who else can take it:
Students who are not in the STEM pathway may still choose Core Mathematics if their junior secondary assessment results show they are ready for the course.
📐 Essential Mathematics
Who takes it:
Learners in the Social Sciences pathway or the Arts & Sports Science pathway normally take Essential Mathematics.
What it focuses on:
Practical and applied math skills such as numeracy, financial literacy, data interpretation, and real-life quantitative reasoning rather than complex theoretical work.
It’s tailored to support careers and studies where basic but solid math skills are needed (e.g., business, humanities, social research, arts, sports science, etc.)
🧑🎓 Who Is Allowed to Do Which?
✅ Core Mathematics:
Default for STEM learners.
Also available to any student (even outside STEM) who demonstrates readiness academically.
✅ Essential Mathematics:
Default for learners in the Social Sciences or Arts & Sports Science pathways.
📌 Important: Both options count toward the compulsory mathematics requirement for senior school, but the level and depth of math studied differ.
🧭 Why Two Maths?
The idea behind offering two forms is to:
Match mathematics study to students’ interests and career goals,
Ensure all students gain useful numeracy skills, and
Give flexibility to pursue advanced math if needed for future courses.
