Names are not just names. They carry meaning, identity, influence, and sometimes even spiritual significance.
Throughout the Bible, God often changed people's names when He wanted to change their identity, destiny, or assignment.
- Abram became Abraham, "father of many nations" (Genesis 17:5).
- Sarai became Sarah, reflecting God's covenant and promise (Genesis 17:15).
- Jacob, whose name was associated with being a supplanter, became Israel after his encounter with God (Genesis 32:28).
- Saul became known as Paul as he stepped into his apostolic assignment to the Gentiles (Acts 13:9).
Names matter because they often communicate identity and purpose.
We also see another side in Scripture. When Daniel and his friends were taken captive to Babylon, their names were changed to reflect the gods and spiritual culture of the land:
- Daniel → Belteshazzar
- Hananiah → Shadrach
- Mishael → Meshach
- Azariah → Abednego

The intention was not merely administrative; it was an attempt to reshape their identity and separate them from their covenant heritage.
This teaches us that names should never be chosen carelessly.
Whether naming a child, a business, a ministry, or an organization, it is important to understand the meaning and implications of the name. Do not choose a name simply because it sounds beautiful, is popular, or is associated with success.
Many parents spend months preparing for a child's birth but never take time to understand the meaning of the name they are giving that child.
How do you know your name has a problem?
Look at the things you are fighting in your life, they are often the same things you have been fighting for a long time. In such cases, there are negative influences attached to your name in the realm of the spirit. Do your research, you may realize that it is your name that is being followed.
As believers, we should seek God's wisdom and direction concerning names.
Most importantly, every believer should take time to pray over their name, dedicate it to God, cover it with the blood of Jesus, and renounce any negative influence, covenant, or association that may be connected to it.
"Therefore God has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow..." — Philippians 2:9-10
Above every name, influence, power, and identity stands the name of Jesus Christ.
Choose names prayerfully. Understand their meaning. Dedicate them to God. And let every name in your life come under the authority of the Name that is above every other name.
