Teach Your Children Their Language First Instead of French or English- Nigerian Author Chimamanda Adichie Tells African Parents

Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has called on African parents to prioritise teaching their children their native languages over foreign ones.

“Do your children speak your language? If they don’t, why? Please don’t tell me they are taking French lessons if they cannot speak Yoruba, if they cannot speak Hausa, if they cannot speak Igbo,” said Chimamanda.

She also told African parents to drop foreign language lessons if their children are yet to learn their mother tongue.

“Please stop that French lesson and start teaching them their language. Because honestly that’s the thing that will give them confidence,” Adichie said.

Chimamanda said the dying of African native languages is the effect of colonialism.

“One of the most insidious things that colonialism did to all of us mentally is that it succeeded in encouraging us to think that what is ours is somehow inferior,” she said.

One thing we have come to note with homeschooled children is their heightened curiosity and courage to ask questions.

Most of our school teach the children to obey and not to ask, feeding them with fear hence making them loose interest in learning more

Schools should teach real-life skills — not just facts for exams. Too many students spend years studying, only to graduate with no clear path, no practical tools, and no idea what to do next. Let’s shift the focus from just grades to growth, from memorizing to mastering life. The future needs thinkers, doers, and creators — not just test-takers.

Grand rising

Nature is our number one teacher. We never get tired of our mama nature. We learn from it each and every day.

It teaches us patience through the changing seasons, resilience through the storms, and beauty in even the smallest details.

From the quiet strength of mountains to the gentle rhythm of the waves, nature reminds us how to live in harmony, adapt with grace, and find peace in simplicity.

It doesn’t rush, yet everything is accomplished—showing us that growth takes time and care.
