ESSAY WRITING CHAMPION CROWNED
David Karani, a third year communication student, impressed many when he read out his essay that won the Essay Writing competition organized by the peer tutors of the university’s Writing and Speech Centre (WSC). The competition, which required students to write a three to five page essay on “The Challenges of University Life, attracted 22 entrants from different majors and academic years. The competition culminated in an award winning ceremony which was held on 2nd April 2014 at the ICT theatre, Athi River campus.
In his opening remarks at the ceremony, Prof. Levi Obonyo, Dean School of Communication, urged students to improve their writing abilities by seeking help at the Writing and Speech Centre.
George Mlaghui, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer at Telkom Orange, was the guest honor. Mr. Mlaghui said that his love for writing and his experience as WSC tutor while a student at Daystar helped him get where he is today. At 28 years, he heads a department and sits in board meetings. Writing, he told the students, “is the key that will open doors.’’
The essays were judged by a panel comprising of Prof. Helen Walker, Dr. Clayton Peel, Dr. Wandia Njoya and Ms. Brenda Wambua the WSC director. Speaking on their behalf, Prof. Walker said that the essays which were received gave her confidence that some of the contestants were going to be among Kenya’s best writers.”
Other outstanding students in the competition included Nita Karume, who got the second position, Esther Mutheu Muema who was ranked third, Hangi Angele, who was fourth. Maria Thiong’o and Marion Gachuhi each received an honourable mention. The top four students won cash prizes totalling 8,000, which were personally donated by some faculty from the School of Communication, as well as modems, notebooks and pens from Telkom Orange. All the participants received certificates.
Also in attendance at the event were faculty from the School of Communication, Language and Performing Arts, Dr. Wandia, Dr Rosemary Kowuor, Dr. Larry Ndivo, Dr. Regina Gachari, Mrs Ann Wachira and Ms. Brenda Wambua. WSC tutors and trainee tutors from both Nairobi and Athi River campuses were also present and made the event memorable.
