We held our Code Red Roundtable on the Future of Work last Friday and the panel was 🔥

A central question emerged during the CODE RED roundtable: what should education truly be centred on… content, the child, or society's needs?

The discussion made a compelling case that examinations alone cannot be the primary measure of readiness. Instead, schools should be preparing learners to thrive in an increasingly unpredictable world.

Two principles stood out:

— Life skills should remain non-negotiable, forming the foundation of every learner's development
— Career pathways should remain flexible, responsive to each child's individual strengths rather than a fixed, standardized route

As education systems evolve, this is a question worth revisiting: are we designing schools around outdated metrics of success, or around the realities our children will actually face?

Today, we turned the question back to our parents: "If you had the power to add subjects to the school curriculum, what would they be?"

The answers were honest, thoughtful, and frankly — overdue. Here's what our parents said their children need to be taught: 👇

🧠 Self-awareness — knowing who you are before the world tells you who to be�🎮 Gaming — because it's not just play, it's a language and a skill our kids already speak�💰 Money wisdom & fiscal responsibility — budgeting, saving, investing, understanding value�🌱 Agriculture — reconnecting children to where food and sustainability actually come from�❤️ Emotional intelligence — understanding and managing emotions, not just academics�🧘 Mental health awareness — normalizing conversations most of us never had growing up�🗣️ Communication — the ability to express, negotiate, and be understood�🛠️ Life skills — the practical, everyday things school often assumes we'll "just know"�🔄 Adaptive skills & adaptability — thriving through change, not just surviving it�🇰🇪 Kiswahili — pride in language, culture, and identity�🤝 Social skills — how to connect, collaborate, and build real relationships

Not one of these was "more math" or "more science." What does that tell us about what parents actually believe their children need to thrive?

As the session moved toward a close, one final question was put to the room: "What is one action you, as a parent, can take today toward a better future for your child?"

Not a five-year plan. Not a complete overhaul of how you parent. Just one deliberate, doable action, something you can actually start with, right now.

Because the future our children walk into won't be shaped by the perfect plan we never got around to starting. It'll be shaped by the small, consistent choices we make today, really listening when they talk about their dreams, letting them try and fail at something new, having the uncomfortable conversation about what they actually want instead of what we assumed for them.
So we're asking you the same question: what's the one action you're willing to commit to?

Who else remembers hearing this from a teacher back in the day: "Sit still! You've got ants in your pants!" 🐜

We were taught that stillness equals learning. That focus only looks one way — quiet, seated, silent.

But is that even true anymore? Our children are growing up in a completely different world, with different ways of thinking, moving, and processing information. Maybe restlessness was never the problem... maybe our classrooms just weren't built for how kids actually learn.

It's time we ask the harder question: do we need to restructure the education system itself? Do our schools need to be rebuilt to actually fit the children sitting in them today, not the children we once were?

Education is such a fascinating, urgent topic. 📚As parents, we can't afford to sit on the sidelines of this conversation...

Education is such a fascinating, urgent topic. 📚

As parents, we can't afford to sit on the sidelines of this conversation. The world our children will work in is shifting faster than any curriculum, any syllabus, any school system can keep up with. If we don't plug in… really engage, ask hard questions, challenge our own assumptions, we risk raising children for a world that no longer exists.

This is why conversations like matter so much. Not because we have all the answers, but because we're finally in a room asking the right questions together.

We are passionate about our children. About their potential. About the life they'll build long after they leave our homes. And that passion means showing up for the uncomfortable conversations, the unclear answers, the "we don't know yet."

Because informed parents make better decisions, and better decisions today shape the children our world needs tomorrow.
