In a historic step towards regional integration and cultural exchange, the Government of Somalia has declared plans to introduce Swahili language lessons in its national education curriculum. The Somali Ministry of Education confirmed that Swahili will be gradually taught in both primary and secondary schools beginning next academic year. This decision aims to strengthen communication and trade links with neighboring East African nations like Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania—where Swahili is widely spoken.

Curriculum experts and language specialists are already developing teaching materials and training programs for teachers across the country. Education analysts say the reform aligns with Somalia’s recent admission into the East African Community (EAC), where Swahili serves as the official language. They believe the initiative will equip Somali youth with linguistic and cultural tools essential for regional cooperation and economic growth.

Various education stakeholders have warmly welcomed the decision, calling it a timely investment in the country’s future. The introduction of Swahili marks a major milestone in Somalia’s education reform; promoting unity, shared identity, and broader opportunities for the next generation.
