Working in rural Kenya, Lumen scales digital literacy through data collection to inspire community- driven change.

Lumen provides rural ICT education by partnering with schools to create computer labs in communities where digital learning is inaccessible. By structuring our curriculum around data collection, Lumen creates a financially sustainable model for computer learning by linking education to a means of data collection and market research for external organizations.

A snapshot of students taken by Teacher Kevin during the recently wrapped Lumen Labs Program with WISER School for Girls in Muhuru Bay.

At the end of the program, students were given a feedback survey about the course. They were asked to evaluate the following statement on a scale of 0-10: "I am more encouraged to solve problems in my community after Lumen's class". We were incredibly encouraged to see a "10" marked on every response.

Digital literacy is not just about mastery of skills, but about applying those skills with purpose. By pairing computer literacy with explicit instruction in creative problem solving, we are betting on the ability of youth to drive change in their own communities.
