Our artificial lighting lessons at Spartan Photography Classes gave our students an opportunity to learn how to create, control and work with light. We introduced them to different types of artificial lights, including strobes, continuous lights and speedlights, as well as useful tools such as softboxes and diffusers.

During the practical session, students learned how the position, direction and intensity of light can change the appearance of a photograph. They experimented with different lighting setups and saw how small changes can affect shadows, highlights, contrast and the overall look of a subject. This helped them connect what they learn in class with real photography situations.

Through these hands-on lessons, our students are gaining more confidence in using artificial light and understanding how to make creative decisions when taking photographs. We believe that combining theory with practical experience helps students develop skills that they can continue to use in portraits, events, studio work and other photography projects. 📷

Our practical lessons at Spartan Photography Classes are where students take what they have learned in class and put it into practice. During these sessions, students get hands on with the cameras, learning how to use different settings, control exposure, focus, compose their shots and understand how to work with real life situations.

The practical sessions also give students a chance to learn from each other. We guide them as they take photos, review their camera settings and make adjustments to improve their images. It is all about learning by doing, building confidence and developing the skills needed to become better photographers.

This was our second consecutive year facilitating the Mindful Photography training under the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), and it has reaffirmed something we deeply believe: photography can be a powerful tool for learning, wellbeing, and meaningful community engagement.

Working alongside participants from SOS Children's Villages Kenya, commonwealth , MOYASA Kenya, Mombasa County Government , LVCT Kenya , KESCA, and Mombasa Young Mothers CBO , we explored how slowing down, observing with intention, and telling authentic visual stories can strengthen both individuals and organisations.

At Spartan Photography Kenya, this is more than a workshop we facilitate. It's a service we offer organisations looking to build stronger storytelling skills, improve staff wellbeing, encourage creative reflection, and document their impact in a way that is human and meaningful. Through mindful photography, teams learn to move beyond simply taking pictures—they learn to see, connect, and communicate with purpose.
