A Generation's Wake-up Call: From apathy to action in Kenya - Scholar Media Africa 23/07/2024

It's essential to acknowledge our past mistakes and understand the gravity of our civic duties. The right to vote, protest, and to hold our leaders accountable are cornerstones of a functioning democracy. However, these rights must be exercised with respect for the constitution and the rights of others. Our actions should aim to safeguard, not endanger, the freedoms and properties of our fellow citizens.

A Generation's Wake-up Call: From apathy to action in Kenya - Scholar Media Africa In 2022, a significant portion of us made the choice to abstain from voting, operating under the belief that our single vote wouldn’t make a tangible difference. This decision, driven by a sense of futility and disillusionment, was a vote in itself—a vote for inaction, a vote for indifference. T...

*Restoring Influence and Trust: Some Perspectives for Government Leaders*

Today, the relationship between governments and their citizens is critical. Influence, is the cornerstone of effective leadership. When governments lose this influence, the repercussions are severe: societal trust erodes, public cooperation wanes, and the ability to enact policies diminishes.

This brief shares the factors that contribute to the loss of governmental influence and offers perspectives and strategies for regaining it.

*Causes of Lost Influence*

1. *Inconsistency of Leaders*: Frequent changes in policies, contradictory statements, and erratic decision-making can confuse and frustrate citizens. Consistency is key to building a stable and predictable environment that fosters trust.

2. *Inaccessibility of Leaders*: When leaders are perceived as distant or disconnected from the reality of people, it creates a gap that undermines trust. Citizens need to feel heard and valued, and accessibility is crucial in bridging this gap.

3. *Political Lies and Unfulfilled Commitments*: Promises that are made during campaigns but are not kept once in office lead to cynicism and disillusionment. Honesty and transparency are vital for maintaining credibility and trust.

*Attempts to Regain Influence*

1. *Establish Consistent Policies and Communication*

- *Develop Clear and Coherent Policies*: Governments should ensure that their policies are well-thought-out and consistent. This involves long-term planning and avoiding abrupt changes that can destabilize the public.

- *Transparent Communication*: Regular and transparent communication is essential. Governments should keep the public informed about policy decisions, the reasoning behind them, and their expected impacts.

2. *Enhance Leader Accessibility and Engagement*

- *Kamukunji Meetings and Public Forums*: Regular interaction with the public through town hall meetings and forums allows leaders to listen to citizens' concerns and provide direct responses.

- *Leverage Technology*: Utilize social media and other digital platforms to engage with citizens. Virtual town halls, Twitter spaces Q&A sessions, and live updates can help bridge the gap between leaders and the public.

3. *Rebuild Trust Through Honesty and Accountability*

- *Admit Mistakes and Learn from Them*: Acknowledging errors and demonstrating a commitment to learning and improvement can help rebuild trust. Leaders should be transparent about failures and the steps being taken to rectify them.

- *Fulfill Promises*: It is crucial to deliver on commitments made. When circumstances prevent this, leaders should communicate openly about the challenges and provide realistic timelines for achieving goals.

4. *Promote Inclusivity and Participation*

- *Engage Diverse Voices*: Involve a wide range of stakeholders in decision-making processes. This includes marginalized groups whose voices are often overlooked.

- *Participatory Governance*: Implement mechanisms that allow citizens to participate actively in governance. This could be through citizen advisory boards, participatory budgeting, or other inclusive practices.

5. *Strengthen Institutions and Rule of Law*

- *Build Robust Institutions*: Strong institutions that operate independently and fairly are essential for maintaining public trust. Governments should work to strengthen the judiciary, law enforcement, and other critical institutions.

- *Ensure Accountability*: Implement stringent measures to hold leaders and public officials accountable for their actions. This includes anti-corruption initiatives and transparent auditing processes.

The power of influence is immense, and for governments, it is the bedrock of effective governance. By addressing the key issues of inconsistency, inaccessibility, and dishonesty, and by implementing strategies that foster trust and engagement, governments can rebuild and maintain their influence.

In an era where public trust is fragile as we have witnessed recently in Kenya and in the past in other nations like Sri Lanka, Morocco, Egypt among others, these measures are not just beneficial but essential for the progress and stability of society. Government leaders must embrace these strategies with sincerity and dedication to truly make a difference.

A Call for Objective and Non-Political Advisory in Kenya's Leadership

Mr. President, as the head of state, your decisions profoundly shape the direction of our nation. Recent debates surrounding the Finance Bill and its call for rejection underscore the critical need for prudent and well-informed decision-making. The consequences of ill-advised policies are glaring, highlighting the urgency for a recalibration of your advisory team. Surrounding yourself with non-political advisors who can provide focused, truthful, and objective counsel is imperative for Kenya's long-term prosperity.

The Current Landscape

The call for the Finance Bill's rejection is symptomatic of broader issues within your administration's decision-making process. Policies perceived as punitive and regressive have sparked widespread discontent. These measures threaten to reverse the socio-economic gains Kenya has achieved over the years. The outcry against the bill reflects a disconnect between policy intentions and the on-ground realities faced by Kenyans.

The Need for Non-Political Advisors

1. Objective Reality Checks: Non-political advisors bring a level-headed perspective, free from the biases of political agendas. They can provide a clear-eyed assessment of policies, ensuring decisions are grounded in reality rather than political expediency.

2. Specialized Expertise: These advisors often possess specialized knowledge in areas critical to national development, such as economics, healthcare, education, and technology. Their insights can enhance the quality of policy formulation, leading to more sustainable and beneficial outcomes.

3. Long-term Vision: Politically driven advice tends to focus on short-term gains, often at the expense of long-term stability. Non-political advisors can help craft strategies that look beyond election cycles, fostering enduring progress.

Lessons from the call for rejection of the Finance Bill

The backlash against the Finance Bill serves as a potent reminder of the dangers of inadequate consultation and rushed policymaking. This experience should prompt a reassessment of your advisory mechanisms. Incorporating diverse voices and expertise will not only improve policy outcomes but also restore public confidence in your administration.

Mr. President, the time for a strategic shift in your advisory framework is now. By embracing non-political advisors who can provide objective, focused, and truthful counsel, you will be better equipped to navigate the complexities of governance. This approach will ensure that policies are not only well-intentioned but also practically viable, paving the way for a prosperous and stable Kenya.

The future of our nation hinges on the wisdom of its leadership. It is in your hands to steer us towards a path of sustainable growth and shared prosperity.

What kind of Africa do You Want?

https://youtu.be/j0YyHXtjufo

African leaders have failed to hold themselves accountable for their actions while in power. Public service in Africa is mostly a gateway to wealth creation through corruption, among other ethical issues. Political leaders habitually make lofty promises and commitments to their citizens in the name of looking for votes in every election cycle. But, as soon as they assume office, they systemically forget.

Do we really have ethical leaders in public offices and politics in Africa? How can we enhance such ethical accountability so that such leaders can facilitate the development of "The Africa We Want"?

Our lack of accountability has been disastrous for the continent. Our actions result in widespread corruption, political wars, economic mismanagement, human rights abuses, ethnic clashes, political wars, economic mismanagement, and human rights abuses.

When will it be time for us to break this cycle? When will we hold our leaders ethically accountable?
