While most may ask "why femicide?", the question could still be "why a Stand-Alone Act?"

A Stand-Alone Act on is a legislative order, that if made law, would define, recognise and punish the intentional and discriminative killing of as a distinct offence.

Kenya for sometime now, has witnessed a chain of documented killings targeted to women and girls. From their observation deck Hope Mutie, Gladwell Watiri , Nuria Martin, Nzia Ndolo and Spencer Muhonja authored a position paper to offer recommendations, especially on .

This paper describes existing frameworks as either silent, vague or too weak to address the gendered nature and power dynamics unique to these killings, with cases ending up mishandled, overlooked, or dismissed, and perpetrators benefiting most from the systemic gaps.

Along with the stand-alone law, these researchers also recommend:
โ€ข Training to law enforcers to understand elements of femicide.
โ€ข A public database of sexual offenders and perpetrators.
โ€ข Civil education against harmful gender norms and misogynistic aspects.

The paper also highlights of women, making them dependent, as a fuel of silence and negative resilience in hostile and abusive environments leading to femicide.

And we beg to ask, would a Stand-Alone Act bring any difference

Peace and prosperity go hand in hand.

KESA represented by Mark Gitau was privileged to participate in the Business and Peacebuilding Roundtable, where leaders from business, academia, financial institutions and social enterprises came together to explore the role of the private sector in promoting sustainable peace across East Africa.

Our contribution focused on expanding opportunities for young people, advancing research-informed public policy and highlighting the importance of economic inclusion in addressing the root causes of conflict.

Together, we can build stronger communities through collaboration, innovation and shared responsibility.

Intergenerational Dialogue 2026

Meaningful progress is achieved when generations listen, learn, and work together.

Represented by Anne Ngige and Denis Katingi, KESA participated in the Intergenerational Dialogue 2026 at Strathmore University. The discussions brought together leaders, professionals, and young people to explore how intergenerational collaboration can shape Kenya's social, economic, and civic future.

At KESA, we believe that stronger policies and sustainable solutions emerge when experience meets fresh perspectives. We appreciate the organisers for creating a platform that encourages constructive dialogue for the benefit of future generations.

KESAโ€“ASA-KU relations are anchored in a partnership that reflects the value of interdisciplinary collaboration in student leadership and professional development.

Over the years, this relationship has continued to demonstrate the role both disciplines play in understanding markets, advancing financial accountability, and contributing to broader economic development.

As one of KESA's member, the ASA-KU has played an important role in broadening the association's reach and perspective by bringing strong accounting dimensions into KESA's wider community.

It was therefore a pleasure for President Spencer Muhonja and OLS Michael Awimbo to join the ASA-KU fraternity on 19th June during its Gala Night and Swearing-In Ceremony held at Verona Hotel, Nairobi.

The occasion marked a significant leadership transition within the association, bringing together members, alumni, and partners to celebrate service, recognise achievement, and formally usher in a new administration.

Particular recognition is due to the outgoing President, Ruth Makena Munini, whose tenure stands among the most distinguished in the association's recent history.

As the first female President of ASA-KU, she demonstrated exceptional leadership that extended beyond the significance of the milestone itself. Her administration was marked by strong organisational performance, active engagement, and a commitment to strengthening the association's standing both within and beyond the university community.

In recognition of her contribution and continued engagement within KESA programmes, KESA presented her with the Best Delegate Award. An award she won at the 4th National Economics Summit in JKUAT.

The incoming leadership under Praise Karanja now assumes the responsibility of building upon this foundation and advancing the association's vision in the years ahead.

In her remarks, Spencer Muhonja noted that, "The future is shaped by those willing to accept responsibility for it. Leadership, therefore, is not merely a privilege entrusted for a season; it is a duty to leave people, organisations, and communities better than we found them."

We look forward to seeing ASA-KU continue to inspire its members to pursue excellence and contribute meaningfully to the growth, integrity, and future of the accounting profession in Kenya and beyond.
