Public speaking, despite being seen as a strength, can actually be a weakness for some people. However, we are not born with poor public speaking skills and end up learning to be afraid of public speaking as we grow up. And this means that we can always unlearn and improve upon our public speaking skills.

THE HUMAN PSYCHOLOGY IN SPEAKING
It is Jim Kwik who said “If an egg is broken by outside force, life ends, If broken by inside force, life begins. Great things always begin from inside.”
Human beings are psychological, you cannot probably speak to them appropriately until you understand something about them. It is therefore of essence that all who would be speakers must seek to understand human psychology to be able to influence humanity effectively through public speaking.
When a speaker neglects the human psychology in public speaking, is like allowing a mad man to run into a crowd with a very sharp sword. Histrory is replete with negative impact that has led to the death of millions of people through the power of speaking.
Understanding human psychology is key for proper use of the art of public speaking.

A GOOD VOICE IS A MARK OF PERSONAL CULTURE
A good voice does not just exist; you have to work it out. A good voice is a mark of personal culture developed over a period of time.
The question is, how do you normally talk to people? Are you a keen student of human nature and life?.
A good voice is an effective possession for the professional speaker and it could also be a great commercial asset. However, one needs to be aware so as to develop the culture of using their voice well.
You can’t be a person who always uses his/her voice to manipulate, quarrel and repulse people and expect to all over a sudden gain that magic voice to draw people to your side when you go on stage.
To create a great personal culture, you will need to be friendly, learn how to be empathic and non judgmental to people. Everyday, life offers us an opportunity to rehearse how to use our voice before we go on stage to deliver a message.
If you want to have a voice that people will listen to, change your personal culture. Begin by taking time to great people with enthusiasm, love people genuinely and be interested in their affairs.
When people detect your genuineness, they will listen. It’s the power of personal culture!.

KEYS TO A GOOD VOICE
The keys to a good voice are:
- [ ] Relaxation
- [ ] Openness
- [ ] Projection
- [ ] Vocal Charm
Relaxation: You need to master relaxation because it is the secret to a good voice.
You should never force your tones because as the voice is a delicate instrument. Always practice and allow your voice to move with easy but never force it to move. This will help you to consistently avoid unnatural constriction which do harm the voice.
To achieve relaxation, learn how to be breath properly. Always breath from your diaphragm; it is the natural and correct method of breathing.
Openness: Many people do not like opening their mouths wide and this hinders them from molding beautiful tones when speaking. Note that sound is a series of waves, and for you to produce great sounds; you have to open your mouth wide. Remember, voice is a series of air and vibration and can only be strengthened with more air and more vibration.
Projection: Vocal projection is very necessary in any delivery. A correctly projected voice will definitely clear the throaty tones which most of the times are inefficient, unattractive and harmful to the throat. The act of projection helps one develop the carrying power of the voice, a fit which is a mark of distinction in all great speakers.
Vocal Charm: Charm is a subtle magnetism that is delightfully contagious. Speakers need to master this priceless gem for usage when engaging the audience and also in their everyday lives.
Develop vocal charm and attract your audience to listen attentively.

THE VOICE AS AN INSTRUMENT
It is Friedrich Nietzsche who said “We often refuse to accept an idea merely because the tone of the VOICE in which it has been expressed is unsympathetic to us.”
How true that is. The tone of your voice can enable proper conveyance of the message or hinder it.
The voice is the core of public speaking and the defining factor of communication.
As a trained musician, I know that the voice is an instrument. It is said that public speaking is nine-tenths voice work and that a rich correctly used voice is the greatest physical factor of persuasiveness and power, often over-topping the effects of reason.
That means, if a person uses his voice well in sharing a message with you, you might find yourself persuaded to believe them without reasoning what they have just said.
Use the instrument called of voice well in your public speaking and deliver your message with effectiveness.

HOW TO MEMORIZE A SPEECH
There are steps to follow to help one memorize their speech.
* First, make a very general outline of your speech.
* Memorize it by using repetition technique. Keep filling in some details and keep memorizing the details the next day even as you keep filling in more details.
* Begin slowly to integrate full sentences, stories and major points. You can move from the broad outline to the text of your speech. The outline will be the easiest to remember and it will provide the “memory tree” to hang the rest of your speech on. Once done, you will have familiarized yourself with the speech.
* If you still find it difficult to memorize your speech, try spicing up the environment a bit and avoid any distractions. Find out new interesting things which are pertinent to your speech which could help you remember your content.
* You can also make use of mnemonics (memory aiding devices) like the method of loci and key word method.
Note: The secret is in practice, practice and practice.
Be optimistic that you can develop a strong memory and become effective in speech delivery.

MEMORY DEVELOPMENT
Extemporaneous speaking cannot be achieved without a strong memory. This is because the speaker needs to internalize the speech and deliver it from the heart.
Memory is the ability to remember the things you have experienced, imagined and learned. For memory to work we first need to take information in, store it in some manner and then retrieve for a purpose later.
Richard Shiffrin and Richard Artkinson developed an influential memory model which assumes that memory involves the processing of information in three successive stages: Sensory, short term and long term memory. To master speeches, the speaker needs to develop long term memory, and for this to happen, the speaker need to understand the principles of memorization.
In memorizing of speeches, you simply need to understand the key principles which are:
1. Existing cognitive structures
2. Interest
3. Spaced repetition
When the speaker understand how this principles work and they utilize them accordingly, they become masters in delivering speeches from the heart.
Until next time, try to work on your memory.
