Have you been restraining yourself from using a microwave oven (MVO), or even buying one? Well, according to WHO, there are no radiations in food cooked or warmed using the MVO. However, of concern are the vessels used to hold the food in the oven.
Always avoid using plastics, unless if indicated microwave safe. The phthalates in the plastics tend to seep into the food when heated. These compounds alter your hormone levels and can result in conditions like diabetes, infertility, and asthma among others. Your to go to vessels when using a MVO, should be made of ceramic or glass.

Bees, bees, bees
These insects have a mutual relationship with the flowers. They get nectar as food and in turn pollinate the flowers.
If you thought climate change is only affecting you, think again. Bee eggs hatch after 14-16 days and around this time flowers should be blooming to provide food. Due to climate change, the bees emerge when the flowers have not bloomed and end up getting no food.
The flowers open later and do not get pollinators. Climate change is this threatening the lives of both bees and plants. This is according to a study by scientists in Utah and North Carolina state universities.
In our daily activities, let us put some effort into mitigating climate change, for our sake and that of our planet.

What are you doing about your plastic waste? According to a recent research, with the pandemic, has come more plastic use which translates to more dumping in the environment.
Some entrepreneurs are converting the plastics into eco friendly products. For instance, Ecopost, a social enterprise here in Kenya makes plastic poles, benches, gardening beds and flower pots all from plastics. Nelplast in Ghana makes cheap pavement blocks from plastics.
However, not everyone can do that, but there are little things each one of us can do to curb the plastic menace in our communities. Disposing of plastic bags, ear buds, masks and bottles in a nearby bin is one step in the right direction. It is a collective responsibility.
The humans with their great intelligence and manipulative ability still share so much with other animals. For instance, the tears of humans, birds and reptiles like crocodiles are so alike according to a new study in Brazil. The tears are modified depending with environment, and pollution plays a role in the modification. In humans, the smokers tears are different from those of nonsmokers. Healthy habits translates to healthy tears and unhealthy ones to unhealthy tears.

Today is world lion's day. These feline mammals are dwindling in number by the day due to poaching and human-wildlife conflict. A century ago, more than a million of these cats roamed the earth. Today, there are estimated 35,000 lions remaining in the world. Sadly in Kenya, one of the world tourist destination for safaris, we have only about 2000 lions in the wild. Let all of us take responsibility to conserve the lions. Creating awareness can make a whole lot of difference.
