The 42nd Annual Conference of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa (AEAA) is underway in Arusha, Tanzania, bringing together education and assessment experts, policymakers and practitioners from across Africa and beyond to explore the future of educational assessment in the age of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Held under the theme “Rethinking Educational Assessment in the Age of Artificial Intelligence (AI),” the conference was officially opened this morning by Prof. Adolf Mkenda (MP), Minister for Education, Science and Technology of Tanzania, in a speech delivered on his behalf by the Permanent Secretary, Prof. Carolyne Nombo.

A notable highlight of the opening ceremony was the presentation of the AEAA Honours to former KNEC Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Paul Wasanga, in recognition of his distinguished service to the Association during his tenure as AEAA President and Executive Secretary.

Taking place from 17–21 August 2026, the conference will explore seven key sub-themes:
🔹 Harnessing AI for personalised, equitable and inclusive education
🔹 The future of e-Assessment and the security dilemma of AI
🔹 Leveraging AI to shape TVET assessments
🔹 Using AI-powered, data-driven decisions to inform educational policy management
🔹 Aligning scenario-based simulations with continuous assessment and competency-based learning
🔹 Promoting academia-industry collaboration for technological literacy and effective practical assessment
🔹 Digital solutions for assessment feedback and the evaluation of teaching and learning

As the Secretariat of AEAA, KNEC plays a central role in coordinating and organising the conference. The Council is represented by its CEO and AEAA Executive Secretary, Dr. David Njengere, alongside other KNEC officials and assessment professionals.

Yesterday, KNEC hosted a high-level stakeholders' meeting to review the country's preparedness for the administration of the 2026 national assessments and examination. The meeting presided over by Hon. John Ololtuaa, the Principal Secretary, State Department for Basic Education, underscored the critical role of inter-agency collaboration in ensuring the smooth, credible and secure administration of national assessments and examinations.

KNEC Chief Executive Officer, Dr. David Njengere announced that the Council has registered approximately 3.6 million candidates for this year's national assessments and the KCSE examination—the largest candidature in KNEC's history.

The Principal Secretary reaffirmed the Ministry of Education's commitment to supporting KNEC and all stakeholders to ensure the assessments and examinations are conducted efficiently, fairly and free from malpractice.

The meeting brought together senior officials from the Ministry of Education and representatives of Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA), Kenya Comprehensive School Heads Association (KECSHA), Kenya Private Schools Association (KPSA), Special School Heads Association of Kenya (SSHAK) and National Parents Association (NPA).

KNEC yesterday hosted a team from the Council of Legal Education (CLE) as part of ongoing collaboration between the two institutions aimed at enhancing the automation of examination processes.

The engagement provided an opportunity to share experiences, insights and best practices in technology-driven examination management, underscoring the shared commitment of both institutions to improving efficiency, integrity and credibility in the administration of examinations.

KNEC remains committed to fostering strategic partnerships and leveraging innovation to strengthen assessment systems and deliver quality educational assessment and credible certification services.
