First-year medical students at UoN’s Chiromo campus were having their very first Anatomy class. A real cadaver lay on the table and the room was dead silent.
Professor Kamau Gaitho walks in and says,
“Before you become good doctors, you must have two important qualities.”
“The first one,” he says, “is that a doctor must never be disgusted by the human body.”
To demonstrate, he calmly sticks his finger into the cadaver’s anus… then puts the finger in his mouth.
The students look at each other in pure horror.
“Now all of you repeat what I just did,” the professor says.
Nobody moves.
After a long, painful silence, Onyango Odipo finally gathers courage, steps forward… does it.
The rest follow one by one, each looking more traumatized than the last.
When the final student finishes, the whole class is standing there pale, uncomfortable, and questioning their life choices.
Professor Kamau smiles.
“The second most important quality of a doctor,” he says, “is observation.”
The class leans in.
“I inserted my middle finger…”
“…but I tasted my index finger.”
Moral of the story: In medicine and in life, pay attention. Otherwise you’ll end up eating problems that were never yours. 😅
