Magdaline Chemirmir
UPDATE: MAGDALENE CHEMIRMIR, a retired teacher of English from Eldama Ravine, is among 242 Kenyans nominated for recognition as national heroes.
Chemirmir has been nominated under the Philanthropy Heroes category in recognition of her contribution to expanding educational opportunities for needy children among communities in Mogotio and Eldama Ravine Constituencies — formerly the larger Koibatek District.
She is the founder of Kiram Academy, an institution established to provide quality and affordable education to children within the community.
The category recognises individuals who have used personal or mobilised resources to uplift vulnerable communities and improve social welfare through initiatives such as affordable healthcare, housing, scholarships and community support programmes.
Two other nominees from Baringo County are Sammy Chemoiwa, the current Principal of the Rift Valley National Polytechnic formerly RVIST, which now has a campus in Mwachon, Eldama Ravine, and Dr. Shadrack Kiptanui Moimett.
Chemoiwa has been nominated under the Scholarship, Professionalism and Research Heroes category, which honours individuals who have made exceptional contributions to academic advancement, research and professional leadership.
Dr. Moimett of Koibatek Herbal Clinic has been nominated under the Cultural Values and Practices Heroes category for his contribution to traditional herbal medicine and the preservation of indigenous knowledge.
The National Heroes Council recently opened the list of nominees for public review before the final selection of individuals to be accorded national hero status.
