South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the only African university to win the prestigious TWIN4READY Horizon Europe Grant. Backed by an award of Kshs 18 Million (Eighteen Million Kenya Shillings), this achievement places SEKU and Kenya at the forefront of global research excellence and climate innovation.
The groundbreaking project, titled TWIN4READY, focuses on developing an AI-driven local digital twin for flood resilience. This advanced system ingeniously integrates satellite data (Copernicus, Sentinel, EO), real-time IoT ground sensors, hybrid physics-AI modeling (CFD, ROM, and Machine Learning), and a GeoLLM natural language decision support interface. Together, these technologies enable the generation of 100-metre resolution flood impact maps in under 30 minutes.
This initiative is driven by a stellar strategic team consisting of Dr. Joel Ngesa (Principal Investigator, SEKU), Prof. Eng. Douglas Sh*tanda (Vice Chancellor, SEKU), Dr. Kezia Mbuthia (Co-PI, SEKU), and Prof. Mark Erick Kimathi (Co-PI, Machakos University). Through global partnerships spanning Kenya, Africa, and Europe, the project successfully bridges the gap between continental flood warnings and building-level municipal decisions, supports the EU Mission on Climate Resilience, and positions Kenya as a leading hub for AI-driven disaster preparedness.

Through this partnership, SEKU continues to strengthen its role as a leader in environmental conservation, research and contributing to Kenya's national and global climate action goals.

As the University advances the next phase of this transformative initiative, every tree planted represents hope, resilience and a lasting investment in future generations.
