The first class will graduate in March 2017; among them, it is expected that 100% will be eligible for public university and government grants. Educating girls reaps lasting, multiplier benefits in low income and developing countries. Some proven impacts are increased wages, better crop yields, lower birth rates, lower infant and mortality rates, lower HIV infection rates, less domestic violence, and more education of subsequent children. And, Kenya is among nations with a high level of need to educate girls; Kenyan girls drop out of secondary school at a rate of 64%, resulting in an estimated lifetime cost of 48% of Gross Domestic Product. LGHS plans to implement a transition year program for its graduates. In Kenya, a lack-of-capacity-induced mandatory “gap” year between secondary school and university exposes many girls to economic and family pressures to marry early and discontinue their educations. LGHS's transition program will keep the girls in school as they await college admission, while teaching them leadership skills and strengthening their abilities to sustain themselves, advocate for women, and spread their knowledge.
