In a school for the Deaf, teaching is not about speed but it is about understanding. Deaf students learn differently. They need more time, more attention, more patience, and more explanation. If you rush, they will only get confused. If you go too fast, they will miss the foundation.
So now, I have learned to slow down. I focus less on “covering” the syllabus and more on uncovering understanding. What matters most is that my students truly grasp what I teach, not how many topics I can tick off.
Teaching in a Deaf school has taught me that the goal is not to finish the scheme of work but it is to finish the work of understanding in the minds of the learners.

Congratulations to Valerie Ntinyari, a determined and confident individual whose quest for education led her to gain admission to Wajir Special Secondary School for the Deaf. Despite being hearing impaired, Valerie opted for inclusive education. Overcoming numerous challenges, she navigated her secondary education journey as the sole non-local and Christian student in the school. Valerie adeptly assimilated herself into the school community, making it her home away from home.
In the recently concluded 2023 KCSE exams, Valerie emerged as the top-performing student in the school, achieving an impressive B + plus in recent release KCSE2023 resuls overall. Her subject grades are as follows: B+ in English and Kiswahili, B- in Mathematics, A+ in Biology, B- in Chemistry, B+ in History, C+ in CRE, and an outstanding A in Kenyan Sign Language.
We extend our heartfelt wishes to Valerie as she continues her educational journey, scaling greater heights in her pursuit of knowledge and excellence.
