"When Kindness Wasn’t Enough"
Sometimes, being a school proprietor isn’t just about running a business — it’s about building a family.
I didn’t just hire teachers. I invested in them.
I provided accommodation for 80% of my staff so they wouldn’t have to worry about rent.
I made sure there was tea break for them during the long school break, because I believed a cared-for teacher is a better teacher.
I kept workloads fair — the least paid was ₦45,000 and handled only two core subjects.
I rewarded loyalty — after two years of service, every teacher got a 22% salary increment, no negotiations needed.
I even allowed free use of the school bus for both teachers and students.
I put my heart, my resources, and my trust into them.
But one morning, my trust shattered.
A new school opened nearby — and without warning, 70% of my teachers walked out. No notice. No farewell. No thank you. They left, even though salaries were paid on time, even though I never owed them a kobo.
The classrooms became empty. The laughter of students faded. My dream — the school I had poured my soul into — coll@ps€d. I had no choice but to shut it down.
Today, many of those same teachers are asking me to reopen.
But I’ve chosen peace.
I no longer stay awake at night wondering how to pay salaries. I no longer carry the weight of a staff payroll on my shoulders.
Some may laugh and say I’m free now… but deep inside, I carry a truth every school owner should know:
You can give your best, and still lose everything.
To every teacher and proprietor — let’s remember that loyalty is the soul of education. Without it, we are building castles in the sand
