That was the first message from our Principal, Prof. Daniel Chebutuk Rotich, as he addressed the newest members of the Kabarnet University College family today.
He gave the students a graduation countdown right from the beginning, asking them to write the date down, mark it on their calendars and, most importantly, work towards it with commitment to their academic journey.
But getting to that day, he reminded them, requires discipline, honesty and responsibility.
Prof. Rotich emphasised that Kabarnet University College has zero tolerance for academic dishonesty. Plagiarism, cheating and piracy are not only subject to serious consequences, but can also taint an individual's integrity and academic record. He challenged the students to protect the records they will build over the next four years and to approach everything they do with honesty and diligence.
He also urged them to become digitally smart by making full use of the University's digital infrastructure. With high-speed Wi-Fi and access to online library resources, students were encouraged to quickly master the technology and digital tools that support their learning.
Financial literacy was another key part of his message. The Principal reminded the students that they are now adults and must learn to manage their finances responsibly. He encouraged them to develop the habit of saving, remain vigilant against fraud and scams, avoid gambling away their money and, importantly, never pay fees or other University-related charges through channels that have not been officially provided by the University.
On accommodation and personal safety, students living within the University were reminded to observe hostel rules, while those living outside campus were urged to prioritise their safety. The University needs to know where its students live, whether they are residents or non-residents, so that it can better support their welfare and security.
His message on discipline was equally clear: discipline does not stop at the campus gate. The students were reminded to protect their freedom, protect their reputation and uphold discipline both within and outside the University.
Drawing from Proverbs 5:23, he reminded them of the consequences of living without discipline and encouraged them to seek help from Guidance and Counselling whenever they need support. The University has facilities and people available to walk with students through challenges they may encounter.
Prof. Rotich further emphasised that Kabarnet University College is an alcohol and drug-free campus. The University will be uncompromising in dealing with possession or use of illicit substances because the campus must remain a safe environment dedicated to learning.
He urged the students not to jeopardise years of hard work because of avoidable habits, reminding them of the sacrifices their families have made to get them to university.
He also challenged them to resist negative peer pressure and to take responsibility for creating a respectful University community. Theft, sexual harassment, cyberbullying and body shaming have no place at Kabarnet University College. Students were reminded that confidential channels are available for reporting harassment and other concerns.
The message from the Principal was ultimately one of purpose, discipline, integrity, responsibility and care for one another.
Four years from now, the goal is to meet again on Friday, 13 September 2030, not just with certificates in hand, but as responsible, disciplined and well-rounded graduates who can look back proudly at the choices they made along the way.
