Psalm 1 Exposition by Robert Mwanga.
A psalm is synonymous to a poem, hymn, a song, or a chant accompanied by instruments too.
The book of Psalms has 150 psalms, hence a collection of different psalms from different authors.
David is considered the main author of the book of psalms, with his name appended to about more than half of the psalms.
Our focus today is on Psalm 1 which has six verses;
1. Blessed is the one who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,
Or stand in the way that sinners take,
Or sit in the company of mockers
2. But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
And who meditates on his law day and night.
3. That person is like a tree planted by the streams of water,
Which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither,
Whatever they do prospers.
4. Not so the wicked!
They are like chaff that wind blows away.
5. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgement,
Nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
6. For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.
The chapter basically, sets us into an introduction to the main theme(s) of the book of psalms, and consequently, the entire bible; (these three are emphasised in other texts in psalms quite a lot)
i. The blessedness of the righteous
ii. The destruction of the wicked
iii. The centrality of the word of God
A keen observation in the passage shows that to be blessed or to be destroyed is really a matter of will(choice). Which demystifies the myth of not taking responsibility of our actions in the consolation that ‘God is sovereign, he knew it before’.
We are responsible of our choices and actions. Much as God is sovereign, and he knows the end before the beginning as written in Isaiah, He has also given us the power of will.
We break down the message as follows;
Verse 1
It clearly portrays to us that in this world there are two groups of people;
a. The wicked, mockers, sinners etc
b. The righteous
The text, ‘blessed is the man who does not…’ implies that it’s upon us to choose whether to be a party to the wicked or be separated/distinct/set apart. However each of the choices has consequences.
If you are separated, you are blessed. If you become part of them, you are led to destruction.
Verse 2
This is for the person who chooses to be separated. These are people who have chosen Jesus, and have given their lives to Christ. It presents to us what the separated, the blessed people of God ought to do; that is; study and meditating on the law of God. (Consistent and intentional)
This means the separated/blessed are not called to passiveness but to action.
Therefore, key also in this passage is the centrality, necessity and importance of God’s word. Which, not only is it emphasised here but also in other texts like; 2nd Tim 3; 16, James 1; 25, Psalm 119; 11 etc?
This is why in church, we emphasise so much on this, among other Christian disciplines like prayer etc. We are encouraged to take Bible study seriously where brethren meet in, to intently study the perfect law that gives freedom –the bible.
Verse 3
It speaks of the effects, consequences, results, benefits of the choice of following the right path –Jesus, in our case. The dimension of the blessedness of the righteous.
i. Streams of water - constant nourishment (both spiritual, and even physically)
ii. Yielding fruit in season –abundance
iii. Leaves do not wither – a continual replenishment and rejuvenation
iv. Whatever they do prospers –prosperity, success
Verse 4
This verse gives the contrast of what happens to the person(s) who disregard to follow Jesus, and become a party to the wicked. They are like chaff (very light, useless dirt).
Their wasting is not sophisticated, only flowing wind is enough to do the job (nature does not favour them, it’s a life of struggle)
Remember, there is no good chaff or better chaff. Chaff is chaff. If you were of God and have somehow become a party to the wicked, make a turn. Choose again to be separated and set aside for God. Repent!
Verse 5
Here, it paints a picture of how the wicked and the righteous cannot stand in the same capacity before God. The distinction is so clear. Jesus said in John 10:14 “I am the good Shepherd, I know my sheep and my sheep know me.” He knows those who are his, you cannot hide in His flock when you are not.
But you can make a choice, intentionally to be among His sheep. Believe in Him, be born again.
Verse 6
This presents to us a promise. God watches over the righteous, those who are His. This gives a sense of protection, belonging, imparting in us the confidence of being in Him.
In reality, as a child of God, you will not be worried with the issues of life. You will walk in faith, big faith, daring faith, because you have confidence in God.
In contrast, He assures the wicked that their end is destruction. There’s no hope for the wicked but despair and anguish. This is a life where you don’t see anything good. You have nothing to smile about. Even when things appears to be going well physically, but you are suffering inside.
The entire chapter is calls us to us consider a ways, and make a choice. Whichever choice we make, it shouldn’t perplex anyone of the consequence attached. We choose the way of following Christ, and enjoy the blessedness in this world and eternal life, or choose wickedness and suffer destruction both in this life and in the life to come.
Chose Christ! AMEN
