The _Launch of the Moi University Africa Multiple Research Centre_ on 14 April 2026 unfolded as a full and layered academic day. The programme began with registration, followed by an opening ceremony. Key university leaders delivered remarks, including Academic Coordinator Prof. Tom Michael Mboya, Director Prof. Peter Simatei, and Dean Prof. Mary Wahome.
The session _Africa Multiple: The Back Story_ set the context before a Moi-ACC Documentary was screened. The morning continued with Research Section Reports covering Affiliations, Arts and Aesthetics, and Early Career Scholars. After a short health break, a second block of reports tackled Gender and Diversity, Knowledges, Learning, Mobilities, and Moralities. Project Output Reports on East African Asian Writing followed, leading into the lunch break.
Afternoon sessions were wide ranging. Presenters like Hassan J. Ndzovu engaged topics from regional integration to Islamic knowledge and indigenous intelligence. After the reports, Prof. Peter Simatei introduced the transition from MUACC to MUAMRC and outlined what was expected in the next project phase.
Another health break preceded Prof. Wandia Njoya’s keynote lecture, _Africa Researching Africa: Funding, Methods, and Impacts_. The Closing Ceremony wrapped up the formal proceedings.
The programme focused on institutional remarks, research outputs, and scholarly exchange, marking the Centre’s launch as a substantial academic event. It also applauded connections made by fellows to other clusters like UNILAG, Rhodes, and Ki-Zerbo in Burkina Faso, grounding ACC as a vehicle that redefined what African Studies is through collaboration. Once Upon a Time in Ilmorog is a re-imagination of Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o’s universe as a single, spiraling trial of Kenya’s conscience, spanning from the colonial courtroom to the post-independence palace, all in a single play.
Through a sequence of ritualized “movements,” the play merges several titles from the writer’s bibliography into a living mosaic, traversing; colonial repression, post-independence betrayal, class struggle, gendered awakening, and the grotesque absurdities of modern authoritarianism into a single dramaturgical arc: a nation putting itself on trial.
Performed in a TikTok-era rhythm of montage, chorus, and spoken word, its direction borrows from Brechtian epic theatre, Wole Soyinka’s ritual poetics, and Peter Brook’s total theatre with the oral tradition at the heart of Ngũgĩ’s work. The result is both a political pageant and spiritual mirror, which the director calls, a theatrical remix of Ngũgĩ for the digital world.
Are you coming for the show? Will you spot the works by Ngũgĩ? See you there!
