Learning goes beyond the classroom through hands-on experience, as exemplified by third-year Horticulture students during their educational field visit to Uhuru Flowers, where they gained practical exposure to commercial greenhouse flower production.

During the visit, students observed key greenhouse operations, including crop management, irrigation systems, pest and disease control, harvesting, and post-harvest handling of roses. They also learned about advanced greenhouse technologies, such as different colored polycovers and shade netting, which optimize the plant microclimate and accelerate flowering in selected rose varieties.

The field experience enabled them to connect theoretical knowledge with practical industry applications, enhancing their understanding of contemporary floriculture production systems. The university expresses sincere gratitude to the management and technical team at Uhuru Flowers for facilitating this valuable learning opportunity.

On 20th November, our students visited Real IPM Thika, where they gained valuable insights into vermicompost preparation, the mass production of biopesticides (Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae, and Bacillus subtilis), the rearing of natural enemies (Amblyseius californicus, Amblyseius cucumeris, and Phytoseiulus persimilis), modern vegetable production, organic farming, and the application of AI in scouting for the False Codling Moth. The visit proved to be highly informative and inspiring.

On Wednesday, 2nd April 2025, Chuka University’s Department of Animal Science joined a critical livestock disease control program organized by the Tharaka Nithi County Government. The vaccination campaign aimed to curb the spread of Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) and Contagious Caprine Pleuropneumonia (CCPP), which are two major diseases affecting small ruminants in the region.

The exercise was conducted in selected areas across the county and involved veterinary officers, animal health professionals, and Diploma in Animal Health and Production students from the university. Students actively participated in administering vaccines, handling animals, and identifying disease symptoms gaining invaluable hands-on experience in the field.

This initiative aligns with Chuka University’s mission to provide experiential learning opportunities while contributing to community development. It also underscores the Department of Animal Science’s commitment to producing graduates with practical skills essential to advancing Kenya’s livestock industry.

The Sustainable Land Use Management (SLUSE) program culminated today with a highly engaging Farmer Feedback Session in Kibugu, Manyatta Constituency, Embu County. The event marked the conclusion of the two-week experiential learning initiative led by the Wangari Maathai Institute, in collaboration with Chuka University and the University of Nairobi.
During the session, students presented their findings and insights gained while working closely with farmers on key agricultural themes: Agro-Entrepreneurship, Irrigation, Dairy Goat Farming, and Macadamia Farming. Their presentations highlighted practical solutions and innovative approaches to enhance productivity and sustainability in these sectors. Farmers in attendance shared their experiences and provided valuable feedback on the impact of the program.
The SLUSE program continues to play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between academic research and on-the-ground agricultural challenges. The hands-on learning experience not only equips students with practical skills but also fosters meaningful partnerships between educational institutions and local communities. As this year’s program wraps up, organizers and stakeholders are optimistic about building on these achievements for future editions of SLUSE, ensuring continued support for sustainable land use management in Kenya. www.chuka.ac.ke University of Nairobi

The Universities Promoting Linkages for Impactful Training, Innovation, and Technology Transfer (UPLIFT) in Agriculture (UPLIFT-Ag) Project held its second consortium meeting from March 4th to 8th, 2025, at the Montclair Hotel in Nyanga, Zimbabwe. Members from the 12 participating universities were hosted by the Zimbabwe Open University (ZOP) and Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT). The event brought together 27 male and 7 female participants from nine universities in Africa and three from Europe.

Chuka University was represented by Prof. Munyiri S.W., Prof. Wambugu S.K., and Ms. Judy Wamuya, the Project Administrator. The consortium conference received progress reports and reviewed and discussed the UPLIFT-Ag Project activities across 5 work packages. These included, among others, a baseline analysis of gaps in agricultural curriculum content and teaching methods, the development and testing of improved teaching methods, the creation and implementation of innovative curricula, capacity building in higher education institutions (HEIs) and industry partnerships to support these curricula, and the strengthening of innovation and entrepreneurial capacity in HEIs.

Prof. Stephen Wambugu presented a report on behalf of the Chuka University chapter regarding Work Package 3 (WP3), which focuses on innovative methods for teaching agriculture. He discussed the proposed curriculum review, which will incorporate agricultural industry partners in co-teaching among other initiatives. The Curriculums to be reviewed under UPLIFT.Ag project will begin with the BSc Agriculture and BSc Horticulture programs, with additional curriculum reviews planned for the coming years within the Faculty of Agriculture departments.

Prof. Shelmith Munyiri, who leads activities under Work Package 2, reported on the joint progress of strengthening university-industry partnerships. This work package assesses HEIs’ capacity to engage with industry partnerships for effective teaching and research in agriculture. It also includes organizing university-industry engagement forums, events, and conferences to establish long term collaboration platforms. Prof. Munyiri emphasized the need for universities to enhance their management systems and policies to facilitate seamless industry partnerships and efficient service delivery.

The consortium concluded with a field excursion to Clairemont Farm, which specializes in apple and peach production as well as trout farming. After visiting the farm, the team explored the popular tourist site, ‘The Rhodes World View’.
