Today, the Busia County Universities and Colleges Students Association (BCUCSA) Executive Committee, led by President Alex Wesonga, paid a courtesy and strategic engagement visit to H.E. Dr. Paul Otuoma, Governor of Busia County.

The meeting focused on establishing a strong working relationship between BCUCSA and the County Government to advance the welfare, leadership, and socio-economic development of university and college students across Busia County.

Key proposals presented included the establishment of a Needy Students Support Kitty, expansion of scholarships, internships, industrial attachments, and employment opportunities, allocation of a BCUCSA coordination office, institutionalization of the Annual Busia Students Convention, and enhanced collaboration in youth leadership, innovation, entrepreneurship, research, climate action, sports, and civic engagement.

YOUTH PUBLIC DEBT OVERSIGHT TRAINING UNDERWAY

The Busia County Universities and Colleges Students Association (BCUCSA), in partnership with the National Democratic Institute (NDI), is currently conducting a Youth Public Debt Oversight Training, bringing together young leaders for a timely conversation on public finance, accountability, and citizen participation.

The session, facilitated by an NDI expert, is equipping participants with practical knowledge on public debt management, oversight mechanisms, transparency, and the critical role of young people in promoting accountable governance.

At BCUCSA, we remain committed to empowering students and youth with the knowledge and skills necessary to actively participate in governance, advocate for responsible public resource management, and contribute to building a transparent and accountable society.

CONDOLENCE MESSAGE AND CALL FOR JUSTICE FOLLOWING THE DEATH OF MS. LAURA WESONGA

The Busia County Universities and Colleges Students Association (BCUCSA) is deeply saddened and disturbed by the tragic death of Ms. Laura Wesonga, a student, who lost her life after being shot during a police operation in Marachi Estate, Busia Town.

On behalf of the students and young people of Busia County, we extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, fellow students, and the entire community during this painful period. We stand in solidarity with all those mourning this heartbreaking loss.

While we acknowledge the responsibility of security agencies to maintain law and order and combat criminal activities, we strongly emphasize that such operations must always prioritize the protection of innocent lives. No young person should lose their life under circumstances where greater caution and professionalism could have prevented such a tragedy.

BCUCSA therefore calls upon the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to conduct a prompt, impartial, and transparent investigation into the incident and ensure that accountability is upheld should any misconduct be established.

We equally urge the National Police Service to continue embracing intelligence-led, professional policing that safeguards the rights, dignity, and lives of innocent citizens while effectively addressing insecurity.

As an association committed to youth leadership, justice, and human rights, we condemn all forms of excessive use of force and reaffirm our commitment to advocating for the protection, safety, and well-being of all students and young people.

May the soul of Ms. Laura Wesonga rest in eternal peace, and may her family find strength and comfort during this difficult time.
