Financial Literacy for College Students: A Life Skill, Not a Unit

As I interact with college students, one thing becomes clear — many are intelligent, ambitious, and full of potential… but financially unprepared.

They can analyze case studies. They can reference theories. They can sit exams.

But ask about budgeting, saving consistently, understanding credit, or investing small amounts wisely — and the room goes quiet.

Financial literacy is not about having money.
It is about managing what you have before life increases it.

College is the safest place to learn money discipline: • How to live below your means
• How to delay gratification
• How to differentiate needs from wants
• How to avoid debt traps disguised as “soft life”
• How to build habits that compound over time

If students leave campus with a degree but without money management skills, we have only done half the job.

Shillings and coins matter.
Small decisions matter.
Habits matter even more.

Financial literacy is not optional. It is foundational.

Let’s prepare students not just to earn — but to sustain, grow, and steward what they earn.

Lets talk about how we can empower our college students...

Master your money...
Money is a good servant... wherever we send it, it goes, but a Bad Master! Money in the hands of the wise stewards it's a great tool! It facilitates comfort, security, freedom, and opportunities, making life easier...
Money is a bad master when we let it control us, when we let it define us, when we are overcome by its pursuit at all costs, so that we are filled with greed, obsession, envy, and when it results in the compromise of our values.
From the abundance of the heart our mouth speaks... I would say, from the abundance of our pockets, our values speak!

As a mum of a teen getting his ID and a pr***en just entering the teenage years… ABBA’s song “Slipping Through My Fingers” hits differently these days. 😢

When they were toddlers, the days felt endless — the cries, the diapers, the chaos. Now I look at them and wonder, where did the time go? Truly, the days are long, but the years are short.

I’m soaking in every little moment — even our market runs — because I know how fast they grow.

I read today that around age 13, a child’s brain literally tunes out their parents’ voices — not rebellion, just independence. It’s part of how they grow. That’s why it’s so important they have other trusted voices guiding them in the right direction.

💡That’s exactly why I’m passionate about our Money Smart Boot Camp — a space where teens can learn about money as a mindset, a value system, and a form of stewardship, from people they can relate to and respect.

👉 Register your child today. Let’s raise money-wise teens together — grounded in wisdom, faith, and purpose. 💛

3 Hard Truths I’ve Learned on My Entrepreneurial Journey

As someone who teaches entrepreneurship, I’ve come to realize the real game-changers aren’t always in the textbooks. Here are 3 traits I now believe truly define successful entrepreneurs:

🔸 Relentless Hunger
You’ve got to really want it. My coach once told me, “Linda, your problem is—you’re not hungry enough.” It stung. But it was true. Hunger drives action.

🔸 Speed Over Perfection
In business, timing is everything. Fail fast, learn fast, move on. Delay too long, and your customer is gone.

🔸 Consistency Beats Talent
Show up. Again and again. Reliability builds trust more than raw talent ever will.

💭 Which one hits home for you? What would you add to the list?

Hey family...

I am reading this book on the monk who sold his Ferrari and one thing that struck me is that we have 6000 thoughts in a day that influence how we live.

From the book I learn that courage is the only virtue that makes all the other virtues possible ..

So my question to you... what could you do and be if you were not afraid?

Let's explore this book together...

"Life is no brief candle for me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations" George Bernard Shaw...

What book are you reading this quarter?

"Quiet Leadership and the Lessons They Don’t Teach You in School"

Leadership is not always about titles or decisions made in the boardroom. Sometimes, it's about the quiet choices made in the background — choosing integrity over comfort, wisdom over reaction, and silence over noise.

Here are a few personal reminders I’ve picked up in recent months:

✅ Not everything needs a response. Silence, when intentional, can be powerful.
✅ Always document key decisions. Verbal goodwill fades, but written clarity protects.
✅ Emotions are valid — but they should not lead your professional choices.
✅ Intentions matter, but so do processes. Doing the right thing the right way is leadership.
✅ You don’t need to explain yourself to everyone. Do what’s right and let time speak.

Above all, stay grounded in your values — especially when the winds blow hardest.

To my fellow leaders: What’s one “hard-earned” leadership lesson you’ve picked up recently? Let’s learn from each other.

🌟 Thoughtful Thursday: Pause & Reflect
Hey Sycamore fam! 🌱

As we move through our busy lives, it’s easy to get caught up in the rush of daily tasks, responsibilities, and goals. But sometimes, the most important thing we can do is simply pause and check in with ourselves. What’s driving us right now? What are we really prioritizing in this season of life?

Today, let’s reflect on a few key questions that can help us bring more clarity and intention into our daily lives.

💭 What are the 3 things that matter most to you right now?
Take a moment to think about this deeply. Is it your personal growth? Your family? Financial stability? Health? Relationships? Whatever it is, let it be a guiding force as you go through the week.

It’s easy to get distracted by the many demands on our time. However, what we prioritize today shapes the life we’ll create tomorrow.

Here’s a gentle reminder: Life doesn’t always need to be a sprint. The most powerful moments often happen when we slow down, think, and take small steps toward our bigger vision.

💬 Reflection for today:
Grab a notebook or journal and jot down those three things that are your true priorities. Then, ask yourself:

Am I focusing on what truly matters, or am I getting lost in things that don’t serve my bigger goals?

What’s one action I can take today that will move me closer to those priorities?

Remember, it’s not about doing everything perfectly — it’s about being intentional with where we put our energy and attention.
