Anna Novick

Anna is a bilingual, bicultural educator who grew up in Hayama, attending Japanese public schools through Grade 9. Early experiences navigating between cultures made questions of identity and belonging present, and at times challenging.

As an undergraduate at Harvard, immersed in a diverse student body and community, she experienced a rigorous liberal arts education emphasizing deep thinking, intellectual discipline, and connections across disciplines. There, she learned to engage with difference as a source of learning leading to new ideas.

Anna has taught in international schools for over 10 years, and believes the purpose of education is to help young people understand themselves, engage openly with difference, and navigate a complex world with confidence.

AHIS SUMMER SCHOOL 2026 is just around the corner!

Apply now as the applications close tomorrow (May 17)

Outdoor Location — MEGURI NO MORI (Forest of Connection) is a large restored forest of approximately 50,000 square meters, located right next to the school campus.�In the hills between Hayama and Yokosuka, it is created through community-led reforestation and conservation efforts.

Indoor Location - SHONAN VILLAGE CENTER�As the school building is currently under construction, indoor activities such as the Design Lab will be held at the Shonan Village Center, located a 10-minute walk from Meguri no Mori.

We are delighted to share that applications for this July's Summer School have far exceeded our expectations. We are truly grateful for the enthusiasm and interest so many of you have shown.

Given that applications have already surpassed our capacity, we will be closing the application deadline on May 17, earlier than originally planned (May 31)

Following the deadline, we will be reviewing submitted applications with careful attention to balance across age, gender, and English proficiency levels, ensuring a safe and enriching experience for all participants. As the program is centered around nature-based activities — with a significant portion of time spent outdoors — safety considerations are also an important factor in our selection process.

We would love nothing more than to welcome every applicant, and we kindly ask for your understanding that we have set a capacity limit in order to maintain the right balance and ensure the safety of all involved.

All applicants will be notified of the outcome by Friday, May 29.

Please note that the result of this Summer School application has no bearing whatsoever on the formal admissions process for AHIS enrollment in 2027.

We are genuinely moved by the level of interest we have received, and our whole team looks forward to reviewing each and every application.

At AHIS, outdoor education is not a seasonal activity or a summer camp experience — it is an essential part of the curriculum, present throughout the year.

The summer programme offers a glimpse into this philosophy, where children learn directly from the natural world through observation, participation, and real-time decision making.

By noticing seasonal changes such as birds building nests, chicks learning to fly, or insects emerging after years underground, students develop a deep understanding of biological systems, life cycles, and interdependence.

More importantly, nature becomes a framework for thinking. Children learn to recognise patterns, relationships, and systems, and to apply these insights to design challenges and collaborative projects.

Outdoor learning is active and responsive: students adapt plans based on changing weather, protect structures they are building, or explore how natural forces like wind can be used creatively.

These experiences build resilience, agency, and practical problem-solving—non-cognitive skills.

The AHIS campus itself is intentionally integrated with nature, making the outdoors a daily learning environment rather than a special destination.

Children at AHIS learn sustainability by living it each day. Nature, energy, water, food, and community are part of everyday learning.

In めぐりの森, the 12 acre forest right next to our campus, students care for animals, grow vegetables, and eat what they help produce. They see natural cycles in action — sunlight to energy, rain to growth, and how ecosystems support life. Younger children begin with small gardens near their classrooms.

The campus itself teaches sustainability. Solar panels generate around 80% of electricity, with real-time data visible so students understand energy use. This power can also support electric school buses, connecting learning to real-world systems.

Water systems are visible and practical. Rainwater is collected and reused for plants, animals, and emergencies. By seeing and using these systems, students understand conservation and limits.

Students also care for land and community.
Trees are preserved, native species planted, and wooden buildings store carbon. Children help maintain these spaces and may sell produce at school events, linking environmental care with social contribution.

Sustainability at AHIS is learned through doing — growing food, managing resources, caring for nature, and contributing to community. It becomes a daily practice shaped by real choices and shared responsibility.

The interior reflects the AHIS’s belief in active, flexible, and self-directed learning.

Rather than fixed classrooms, the open plan allows children to choose how and where they work, fostering independence, focus, and ownership.

The design also encourages interaction across age groups—Younger students learn by observing older peers, while older students develop leadership and responsibility.

Natural materials and light-filled spaces create a calm, connected atmosphere.

Movement is built into the layout, with wide pathways, tiered steps, and varied zones supporting shifts between collaboration, hands-on activity, and quiet study. Flexible furniture allows the space to adapt throughout the day, showing that learning extends across the building.

A defining feature is the mezzanine-level library winding through the heart of the building, creating a continuous landscape for reading and discovery. Elevated above the main floor, it offers a sense of retreat while staying visually connected below.

Why Yusuke Umeda is building Akiya Hayama International School.

For Yusuke Umeda, founding Akiya Hayama International School is not about adding another school. It is about rethinking what education must become in a world transformed by AI.

After raising his children in Tokyo within Japan’s exam-driven system, Umeda began to question whether conventional schooling truly prepares students for the future. Academic success alone no longer felt sufficient.

What began as a personal wish — 「教育の選択肢がもっとあったらいいのにな」 (“I wish there were more educational options”) — grew into a deeper belief: education itself must evolve.

As AI makes information and ex*****on instant and accessible, simply having the right answers is no longer a lasting advantage.

The essential question becomes: what uniquely human qualities should schools nurture?

Umeda believes the next generation will need generative drive, ethical judgment, empathy, and the confidence to navigate uncertainty.
