Welcome Home, Batch 69!
It has been about one week since our Batch 69 participants returned to their home countries.
After spending nearly two months together in Japan, they are now reconnecting with their families, friends, and colleagues while gradually returning to their daily lives. Many are also visiting their local IATSS Forum Secretariats and Committees to share the knowledge, experiences, and inspiration they gained during the program.
We would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to all of the IATSS Forum Secretariats and Committees across Asia for their continued support before, during, and after the program. Your dedication plays an essential role in helping our participants continue their journey beyond Japan.
As Batch 69 begins this new chapter, we hope they will actively engage with their Alumni Associations, expand the IATSS network in their own countries, and continue building meaningful connections with fellow alumni. By working together and learning from one another, we believe they will create even greater value and positive impact in their communities.
The IATSS Forum does not end with the closing ceremony—it marks the beginning of a lifelong journey as part of the IATSS community.

It has been about one week since our Batch 69 participants returned to their home countries.

After spending nearly two months together in Japan, they are now reconnecting with their families, friends, and colleagues while gradually returning to their daily lives. Until We Meet Again, Japan 🇯🇵❤️

Today is our last day, and we do so with grateful hearts, unforgettable memories, and friendships that will last a lifetime.

Over the past two months, the IATSS Forum has given us far more than knowledge. It has taught us the true meaning of leadership, mutual respect, cultural understanding, and the power of working together toward a better future. Every lecture, field visit, discussion, and shared experience has become a part of who we are.

Our heartfelt appreciation goes to all the professors, distinguished guests, volunteers, JIFA, our host organization Honda, and everyone behind the scenes whose dedication made this life-changing journey possible. Thank you for welcoming us with such warmth and kindness.

Although we are leaving now, we are taking home not only lessons and memories but also the spirit of the IATSS Forum. Like the brook in Alfred Lord Tennyson’s poem, our journey does not end here. We may return to our own countries, but the spirit of the IATSS Forum will continue to flow through our lives as we strive to make a positive impact in our communities.

This is not a farewell. It is simply until we meet again. We look forward to crossing paths again, somewhere in the world, as one IATSS family.

Together We Learned, Together We Grew

🌟We are deeply grateful as we conclude our unforgettable two-month journey at the IATSS Leadership Development Forum.

🕤Over the past two months, we have experienced far more than a leadership program. Together, we have learned, grown, challenged ourselves, and built friendships that transcend borders, cultures, and languages. Every lecture, field visit, discussion, and shared experience has strengthened not only our knowledge but also our understanding of one another and of the world we hope to shape.

🙏Our heartfelt appreciation goes to all the professors and lecturers for generously sharing your knowledge and wisdom; our distinguished guest speakers for inspiring us through your experiences; our dedicated volunteers for your kindness, patience, and constant support; JIFA for your thoughtful hospitality, especially for the unforgettable Mt. Fuji trip and the wonderful dinner; the embassies for honoring us with your presence at the closing ceremony and for your continued encouragement and support; our host organization, Honda, for warmly welcoming us, sharing your vision, and giving us invaluable opportunities to learn from your innovation and commitment to society; the local communities that hosted our visits; and everyone working behind the scenes whose dedication made this incredible journey possible.

🤝To our forum participants, thank you for the teamwork, meaningful conversations, laughter, challenges, and unforgettable memories. Despite coming from different countries and backgrounds, we became one family, united by a shared vision of becoming better leaders and creating positive change in our communities.

⭐️Although this chapter has come to an end, the friendships we have built, the lessons we have learned, and the inspiration we have gained will stay with us forever. We look forward to carrying the IATSS spirit back to our respective countries and continuing to contribute to a better future.

One of the most inspiring parts of our study trip in Iwate was the opportunity to learn directly from organizations that are creating long-term value through sustainability and local innovation.

Our first visit was to a forestry company that is committed not only to protecting forests from overexploitation but also to managing them sustainably for future generations. It reminded me that sustainable forestry is not simply about conserving trees—it is about maintaining a healthy ecosystem while ensuring that natural resources continue to benefit communities for many years to come.

We also visited a local winery that produces high-quality wine using locally grown grapes. What makes the winery truly unique is its underwater aging process, where bottles are stored beneath the ocean. Over time, marine organisms naturally attach to the bottles, creating beautiful and unique packaging. More importantly, this initiative demonstrates how local resources and creativity can be combined to build a distinctive product while promoting the region's identity. It also creates opportunities to support other local industries, including oyster farming and tourism, showing how one innovation can generate value across an entire community.

What impressed me most was that both organizations share the same mindset: rather than relying on external resources, they focus on maximizing the potential of what already exists within their local community. Their stories reminded me that innovation does not always mean inventing something completely new—it can also mean reimagining local resources in ways that create sustainable economic, social, and environmental impact.

A heartfelt thank you to all the speakers for generously sharing your experiences, challenges, and vision. Your passion and dedication made the visits far more meaningful than simply touring the facilities. Learning directly from the people behind these initiatives gave us valuable insights that cannot be found in textbooks.

I truly appreciate everyone who made this visit possible. It has inspired me to think more deeply about how we can create sustainable businesses by leveraging local resources, empowering communities, and building solutions that create lasting impact.

"The Power of Dreams" 💭✨

Over the past weeks, we have learned from academia, the public sector, NGOs, civil societies, and local communities.

The session on "Innovation for Mobility" marked the closing of the seminar phase of the IATSS Forum. This was especially meaningful because it highlighted the importance of the private sector.

The future of sustainable development cannot be built by any one sector alone. The private sector brings innovation, employment, investment, implementation capacity, and the ability to scale solutions globally.

Many of our global challenges are not caused by a lack of solutions, but a lack of willingness and ability to work together.

I believe we must move beyond the traditional partnership:

🏛 Public + 🏢 Private

towards a more inclusive partnership:

🏛 Public + 🏢 Private + 👥 People

Each sector brings something essential: policy, innovation, lived experience, community knowledge, research, evidence, and the ability to turn ideas into action.

We know that no single sector can solve complex societal challenges alone.

💭✨ "The Power of Dreams"

This is where I find a strong connection with the founding of IATSS by Honda founders.

Dreams, creativity, and collective action can move people and society forward, but we must create the partnerships capable of turning dreams into reality.

💭 So, what can we dream, create, and achieve together that no one can achieve alone?

This is the essence of a term I coined as "togetheristic" to describe a willingness and ability to work together.

For me, my dream of the future is beyond 🚆 Mobility as a Service (MaaS).

It is moving towards 🤝 Together as a Service (TaaS).

Because the most advanced technology, the most sophisticated policy, and the most ambitious vision will ultimately be limited by the strength of the partnerships behind them.

Hi, this is Razman from Malaysia.

Today, I would like to share about our Group Study journey of thinking and learning together.

Throughout this group study, we exchanged ideas, learned from one another, built consensus and worked together creatively to achieve our shared goal. Every discussion, challenge and different perspective helped us grow, not only as a team but also as individuals.

We hope that the ideas we developed will contribute to positive change in our communities and continue to inspire future participants to think beyond boundaries, collaborate across cultures and create a better future together.

This is Nong from Laos 🇱🇦

😬 Our day in Iwate started with something unexpected. At around 5:30 a.m., we experienced a 6.9-magnitude earthquake. For many of us, it was the first earthquake we had ever felt. Although there was no tsunami threat, it made me stop and think.

😮I couldn't imagine what the people of Iwate experienced in 2011—feeling a powerful earthquake while knowing that a massive tsunami was approaching. Compared to what they went through, our experience was only a brief moment of staying in a safe place and following evacuation instructions.

🗾Throughout the day, we visited several communities that were devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. Seeing the affected areas with my own eyes was truly emotional. We also visited the massive seawalls that have been rebuilt to protect coastal communities from future disasters. Standing there, I could feel Japan's determination to rebuild stronger and prepare for the future.

🌅One of the most meaningful activities was participating in an evacuation drill, where we climbed to higher ground just as local residents would during a tsunami warning. It reminded me that disaster preparedness is not just about infrastructure—it is about saving lives.

We also learned inspiring stories of local heroes and community leaders who dedicated themselves to protecting others, helping communities recover, and building evacuation facilities for future generations. Their selflessness was deeply moving.

Beyond disaster recovery, Iwate also showed us its peaceful and breathtaking beauty. Walking along the coastline near the seawalls, it was hard to imagine that this serene place had once faced such unimaginable destruction.

Perhaps the biggest lesson we learned was that disaster resilience is built through collaboration. The Japanese national government, local governments, communities, schools, volunteers, and citizens all worked together after the tsunami. They continue to educate children and residents through regular evacuation drills and disaster awareness programs so that future generations are prepared.

Iwate taught me that while disasters cannot always be prevented, their impact can be greatly reduced through preparation, education, cooperation, and resilience.

Xin chào mọi người! I'm Jane from Vietnam 🇻🇳

🌿 Field study brought us to Minamisanriku, a town that has transformed the challenges of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake into opportunities for sustainable development and community resilience.

♻️ We started a day by learning about Circular Economy and Local Industry through AMITA Circular and Mr. Nobuhiro Okada.

What impressed me most was that Minamisanriku's circular economy goes far beyond recycling. It is a community-wide system where local government, businesses, and residents work together to circulate resources, energy, and value.

Household food waste is collected and converted into biogas for electricity and liquid fertilizer for local farms, creating a continuous cycle that connects forests, agriculture, fisheries, and people's daily lives. It showed us that sustainability is not just an environmental goal but also strengthen local industries and build a more resilient community.

🦪 In the afternoon, we visited the Oyster Club to learn about Minamisanriku Togura Kaki, the first oyster farming cooperative in Japan to achieve ASC international certification for responsible aquaculture.

Rather than producing more, local oyster farmers chose to reduce the number of oyster rafts, allowing oysters to grow in a healthier marine environment. The result was not only higher-quality oysters but also a more sustainable ecosystem for future generations. It was a powerful reminder that long-term sustainability sometimes begins with the courage to choose quality over quantity.

💡 One lesson I will always remember from Minamisanriku is that sustainability is about (re)designing systems so that people, nature, and local industries can thrive together.
