We spent a full day learning how to print fabric with stencils & rice paste. We were at the Noguchi, a humble home studio by 8th generation producers. It’s a technique called Katazome. After the paste dries, the fabric is dipped in the indigo vat for color.

This the bathhouse at the farm where I am staying now and where we host the 10 day Shibori textile workshops. It’s very nice with a dressing room, shower and hot mineral bath. My Japanese friends from Tokyo visited me here and said only rich people have their own bathhouses and had never seen one in person. It’s so relaxing to steep in the hot bath on a cold day and after working all day.

First draft of our Shibori book on Japanese textiles. We are designing sewing patterns, making test pieces, photographs and video of each step and writing instructions. Only about 25% fone so far. This is a 2 to 3 year project in between workshops.

I’m staying at the Mitsui Garden Hotel in Kyoto. They have maintained the facades of the original houses along entire streets then built modern hotels and stores behind them. Very lovely and smart to conserve the historic charm on the very old buildings.
