After World War II, November 23, the traditional day of the “Niinamesai” (Harvest Festival), was changed to “Labor Thanksgiving Day.” Today, only about 20% of Japanese people know about Niinamesai, one of the oldest harvest festivals in the world. This ancient tradition is in danger of being forgotten.
Although many countries around the world have festivals to celebrate the harvest, in Japan the custom of Niinamesai has faded, while people now celebrate foreign events like Beaujolais Nouveau and Halloween.
This petition seeks to restore the traditional “Niinamesai” by renaming “Labor Thanksgiving Day” back to “Niinamesai Day,” making it a national holiday for all Japanese people to celebrate together.
