Here's a *sweet* English tip for you: In casual speech *sweet* is used to mean great or cool.

例文:

"Did you see the Matrix? That was a pretty sweet movie"

You can also use it as an interjection.

例文:

A) Here—I bought you some ice cream.
B) Sweet!!

Today's idiom: To Get Caught Red Handed

Meaning: To be caught in the middle of doing something wrong

Usage: Use this whenever you catch someone doing something wrong. It could be serious like a crime or minor like a child disobeying his parents.

Example:

- He tried to steal from the shop but he was caught red-handed.
- Bobby's mom caught him red-handed trying to sneak a drink of beer.

This idiom originated in the 14th century when the act of killing another man's animal and selling the meat was a common crime. If a person was caught with the blood of a freshly killed animal on their hands this was considered proof of their guilt.

Today's idiom: Break a leg

Meaning: Good luck!

Whenever you want to wish someone good luck, you can use this phrase.

For Example:

A: I have to give a presentation in a few minutes. I'm really nervous!
B: You'll do fine. Go break a leg!

Why break a leg? The phrase comes from theater groups. At one time it was believed that wishing an actor good luck would have the opposite result, so they started wishing bad luck, again expecting that the opposite would happen. Strange, isn't it?

i.e. and e.g.

I'm sure you have come across these two abbreviations before. They are actually Latin words. They are very common and you will find them in both formal and casual writing.

1. e.g.

e.g. means exempli gratia, a Latin phrase which means "for example". You find e.g. in front of examples. Such as this:

- I like Japanese food. e.g. Natto

2. i.e.

i.e. means id est, a Latin phrase which means "that is", or "in other words". We use i.e. to explain what we mean. Here is an example:

- Caesar was killed on the Ides of March. i.e. March 15th
