アメリカ・ワシントン州の大学で英文学を専攻しているインターン生のEvaが、文学のクラスを実施しました。
取り上げた作品は、京都を舞台とした川端康成の代表作『古都』
高度経済成長期まっただ中の1960年代初頭の京都を舞台に、伝統と革新、変化と不変の間で揺れ動く人々の心を、四季の移ろいとともに繊細に描いた名作です。
授業では、単に英訳を読むだけでなく、テキスト分析・フィールドワーク・映画鑑賞の三部構成で、作品世界をより立体的に理解することを目指しました。
特に、物語の舞台となった場所を実際に訪れ、作品を読み解くフィールドワークでは、京都府立植物園の職員の方々のご協力のもと、川端康成の足跡をたどりながら、当時の京都に思いを馳せることができました。
日本文学をあえて英語で読むことで、私たちが普段当たり前だと思っていることや、理解しているつもりでいたことから一歩距離を置き、新たな視点で見つめ直しました。
その結果、日本の伝統や美意識について、多くの気づきを得る機会となりました。
AtchiKochi’s intern, Eva Donovan, an English literature major at a university in the U.S., led a literature class focused on The Old Capital, a classic novel by Yasunari Kawabata set in early 1960s Kyoto.
In this class, we explored the work not only through its English translation, but also through a three-part approach that included text analysis, fieldwork, and film viewing. This helped us gain a deeper and multidimensional understanding of the story.
During the fieldwork in particular, we were able to reflect on the Kyoto of that time while tracing Kawabata’s footsteps. This was made possible by the generous support of the staff at the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, who shared their knowledge of the original layout of the gardens and what their reopening meant to people living in a rapidly modernizing Kyoto.
By reading Japanese literature in English, we were able to step back from what we often take for granted and look at familiar ideas from a new perspective. In doing so, we gained fresh insights into Japanese traditions and aesthetics.
