On August 6, Kyoto’s Shimogamo-jinja Shrine held the ancient Nagoshi Shinji (Yatori Shinji) purification ritual. After paper effigies carrying worshippers’ impurities are released into the sacred Mitarashi Pond, participants race into the water to catch one of 50 sacred arrows, believed to bring good fortune and protection. The ritual is rooted in the shrine’s ancient legend of the sacred arrow and the birth of the Kamo deity.

⛰️ Every year on July 31, thousands of people climb Mount Atago in Kyoto for the traditional Atago-san Sennichi Mairi (愛宕山千日詣り). According to tradition, visiting Atago Shrine on this special day brings the blessings of 1000 pilgrimages and is believed to protect homes and families from fire for the coming year 🔥
Although many pilgrims climb the mountain at night, creating a unique atmosphere along the lantern-lit trail, it is also possible to make the pilgrimage during the daytime, as many people do.
