I’d already been working in education for 5 years, and I had one dream sitting quietly in the back of my mind… live and work in Japan. That dream got put on ice for what felt like forever.
I never let it go — and I finally made it happen.

Hi, I’m Mr G. I got chosen as the one teacher to represent Australia as the Hyogo Prefecture Exchange Teacher — which turned into working two jobes, one in a Japanese high school and another at the Hyogo Board of Education while trying (badly, at first) to learn the language.

That “one exchange” turned into travelling all over the country, way too many nerdy fanboy moments, an appearance on Japanese TV (I still can’t quite believe that happened), and eventually leaving my classroom in Australia behind for good.

Now this is where I share it all — the culture, the travel, the food, the mistakes, and what teaching and living in Japan is actually like, beyond the tourist version and what you have seen online.

My whole thing is to teach and help you understand more about Japan, not just visit it.

Koyasan has been sacred for 1,200 years — and it’s still hiding secrets in plain sight.

One of Japan’s most famous warlords is buried right here, among the monks.

There’s a well where legend says if you don’t see your reflection, you have three years left.

Even the mascot’s birthday isn’t random! It’s the same day the mountain’s founder entered eternal meditation.

I’ve traveled across Japan… nowhere feels like Koyasan.

Koyasan doesn’t just look beautiful, for once when I say this, it genuinely feels like stepping into another world✨

1,000-year-old cedar trees, lanterns that have burned for centuries, and a silence you can’t find anywhere else in the country. It is one of the most breathtaking places Ive ever been too ever.

200,000 graves. 900-year-old lanterns. We came for the history… stayed for the snake vs. frog 🐍🐸

Came to Okunoin for 1,000 years of history and 900-year-old lanterns. Left having watched a snake and frog for 10 straight minutes. 10/10 still recommend.

I travelled 6 hours to see Japan’s tallest waterfall… and arrived 30 minutes too late 😭

Nachi Falls is one of Japan’s most sacred waterfalls (133m of pure drop) and I got there just as the light disappeared.

Genuinely thought the trip was wasted… until I stuck around and came back the next day 😂

Japan’s most dangerous thing? Ice cream 🍦🇯🇵

No, seriously.

Japanese ice cream is SO good, and with konbinis on every corner and endless crazy flavours to try, I ended up eating it almost every single day 😂

Matcha, melon, sweet potato, chocolate monaka… I wanted to try them all.

If you visit Japan, you HAVE to try the ice cream. Just be careful — once you start, you might not be able to stop 🍦😂

🍎🏮 I thought it was just a lantern… then it started transforming 🤯

Getting up close to the Hirosaki Neputa in Kobe was an amazing experience that let me see how these giant floats work spin, rise, fold, and transform right before your eyes!

The craftsmanship, engineering, and teamwork behind these floats is something you don’t fully appreciate until you see it in person play out in fron of you✨
