🌍 In the Light of Peace and in Celebration of United Nations Day

True peace cannot grow in a place where people are always trying to compete with one another. Competition can be healthy, it helps us learn teamwork and perseverance, especially in sports. But on days like United Nations Day, we set competition aside to celebrate peace, friendship, and unity among all nations and cultures.

Tomorrow, our school will celebrate United Nations Day with the theme “We Are One, But We Are Different.” This special event is not about who has the best costume or who looks the best on stage. Instead, it is a day to help our children understand that our world is full of many different people, with different skin colors, languages, and traditions and that these differences make our world more beautiful.

At GPA International Montessori School, we hope to guide our children to respect and appreciate others, to be comfortable with themselves, to understand that it is okay to be different, to be open-minded, and to treat everyone with kindness. When we do this, we help create a peaceful world, starting right here in our own community.

May this celebration remind us all that even though we come from different places, we share one world and one dream , peace. 🌿💖

At the Montessori school that Hikarin attends, meditation (quiet practice) is incorporated every morning before classes and the curriculum.

This allows students to slowly observe themselves, reducing the tendency to be pulled by the outside world (and even if they are, they learn to accept that part of themselves). This enables them to live more authentically and reduces the need to deny themselves or others or to hide their true selves. As a result, the quality of relationships improves, and the quality of thoughts and actions is enhanced.

However, to implement this, the mentality and presence of the teachers are crucial, which can be very challenging for them. Yet, to fundamentally change the essence of education, it might be worthwhile to boldly incorporate this practice.

In Japan and the East, there has long been a spirit of “the Way,” a cultural tradition that integrates the three elements of mind, skill, and body. For the mind, there is meditation and Zen, which are already embedded in our DNA. By making them a habit, we can nurture metacognition, reduce the false self, and naturally diminish anger and hurt. This allows us to live as our true selves, potentially enriching personality development.

It might become an era where the being of parents and teachers is questioned by children.

As children change, adults change, and society changes.
