One day, my daughter said to me:

"You have forgotten how to be with young kids. You speak too much. You need to speak less, and listen more."

How true!

I think many of us need a reminder to speak less and listen more. When we listen to our children we show them that:
1. We love them.
2. We are interested in them.
3. We value them.

The child learns:
1. I am lovable.
2. I am interesting.
3. I am valuable.

The greatest gift of all.

(By the way, speaking less and listening more works with adults too!) 😉

My daughter told me: "You have forgotten how to be with young kids. You speak too much. You need to speak less and listen more.

People in general, and parents in specific, spend a lot of anxious or frustrated thoughts on things that they cannot do anything about. What if we could simplify our parenting lives by only clinging on to thoughts about those aspects of our children’s lives that we can influence? Many worries and frustrations would disappear. We would still care about our children and be interested in what they say and what happens to them, but we wouldn’t waste so much energy on useless worries and frustrations.

Unfortunately, children’s mental health seems to be on the decline in many places around the world. This is scary news, but instead of worrying about it, let’s focus on what we can do about it. As individuals we may not be able to change the governments, school curriculums or whatever else we want to blame, but we CAN change how we interact with our own children. The ability to speak about one’s own emotions is strongly linked to mental health.

Does your child speak to you about their emotions? (Are you a good listener?)

How do you model expressing emotions? (Do you express your own emotions in healthy ways?)

Do you accept all of your child’s emotions? (Or only the “easy” ones?)

Research has shown that the ability to speak about one’s own emotions with a parent or another trusted adult promotes mental health. Children who learn to express their emotions are better protected from everything from school absence to drug addictions, depressions and even su***de.

As human beings, we often share the same goals and we hit the same obstacles, and yet we have such different paths to getting to where we want.

Even though many of my clients work on the same challenges (time management, finding out what they want, managing emotions, overcoming fear, taking new steps forward in their careers etc), they all “get there” in different ways. For example, three different clients who all had a lot of fights wi...

New website!

In addition to my ordinary parent coaching website, I now also have this site: www.icf-coaching.org/liv-miyagawa/

A new exciting difference on this site is that I openly write that I, in addition to parent coaching, also do career coaching.

Career coaching is something that I never really planned to do, but have found myself doing a lot of during these past two years. I have had clients making everything from small but important improvements in their working situations to drastic changes to their careers. I have had clients in the process of figuring out “what’s the next step” as well as clients who wonder “what’s my first step”.

Career coaching is exciting as it often brings us deep down to the very bottom of who we are, who we want to be, what is most important to us and what is the purpose of our lives.

Liv is a parent coach, helping parents to solve fights with their children, raise their motivation and support their unique needs.

I think I might have the most exciting job on the planet.
1. I get to speak to a lot of different people from different countries, different cultures and different life situations.
2. I get to help people figure out what they really want and what is important to them.
3. I get to help them find the route from where they are now towards where they want to me.
4. I get to do all this from home where I have my very important family.

Having coaching sessions with Liv has been a very valuable experience. At a time when my life was very complicated and muddled, the sessions made the situation I was in much clearer. They have helped me to understand what it is that I want and need, and, crucially, in developing plans for how to get...

First day back to coaching after the Christmas and New Year holidays!

I have lots of emails waiting to be answered, so those of you who are waiting for a reply, please bear with me! My children are still on holiday, so I will start slow. We have had a really good time doing the small things in life that brings me so much happiness, but unfortunately are in danger of being swept away in normal everyday life, such as reading together, playing games and going to the park. I’m excited about this new 2023 and all the coaching opportunities that it will bring me to speak to individual parents and groups.

All the best wishes for YOUR 2023!
