Founded in April 1992, The Yokota Air Base Kendo Club has been providing the Yokota community with the opportunity to learn the Japanese art of kendo. Our members are active duty military, family members, local area foreign residents of Japan, base Japanese staff, and local area kendoists. Our instructor, Kazuto Miura, is head of the Akishima City Kendo Federation and holds the rank of 7th “Dan” i
n kendo with almost 50 years experience. Miura sensei is also the headmaster of Keitenkan Dojo in Akishima where we are also welcome guests for practice. There is no charge for the classes, all our efforts are on a volunteer basis. Should someone stick with kendo long enough to earn rank, we test with the rest of the All Japan Kendo Federation and under their rules which do have fees. The amount varies with the rank one tests for. Classes are conducted in a mix of English and Japanese with lots of visual demonstration; Japanese fluency is not required. Kendo is a unique part of Japanese culture and history. Learning kendo gives you not only the opportunity to learn more about Japan, its culture, and its history, but also to learn more about yourself as a human being and experience parts of Japan that most visitors never even know exist.
