Across three days, our master’s students presented the results of their research and answered many difficult questions from the Professors.

🌏 Internship at the HCCH Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific 🌏
🗓️ July 27 - August 14, 2026
📍 Hong Kong SAR

Our student recently completed an internship at the HCCH Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP) and gained practical experience in private international law.

During the internship she continued legal research on the 1985 HCCH Trusts Convention and related Hong Kong judgments. Her work also included preparing a summary of an APEC workshop and participating in the Third Joint Legal Workshop 2026.

The internship was a valuable opportunity to learn more about the practical work of the HCCH and international cooperation in private international law.

🇨🇳 Shanghai Summer School 2026 🇨🇳
🗓️ June 28 - July 25, 2026
📍 East China University of Political Science and Law, Shanghai

Our students recently took part in the Shanghai Summer School on Chinese Political and Legal Culture, joining around 30 students from 14 countries for a month of academic and cultural exchange.

The school covered different areas of Chinese law and politics, including legal history, criminal procedure, international trade, foreign investment and intellectual property. Students also explored Chinese culture through language, calligraphy and traditional opera, and visited legal institutions and cultural sites around Shanghai. It was a valuable academic experience.

Kyushu University International Programs in Law is happy to provide our students with more academic opportunities abroad.

📚 Creative Economy Fieldwork in Hakata
🗓️ July 9, 2026

20 students from the Creative Economy and Cultural Diversity class, accompanied by Prof. Ryu Kojima, took part in fieldwork around Hakata and visited three important cultural sites:

🏺 Hakata Traditional Craft and Design Museum
🏘️ Hakata Machiya Folk Museum
⛩️ Kushida Shrine

At the Hakata Traditional Craft and Design Museum, students learned about the history of local crafts, including Hakata dolls, Hakata textiles, Hakata scissors and Hakata spinning tops. They also explored how some of these crafts were influenced by cultural exchange with China.

The visit to the Hakata Machiya Folk Museum introduced students to the traditional culture of the Hakata area, including local festivals, neighbourhood life, dialects and crafts. Students also learned more about the Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival, which takes place every July and brings together seven local nagare teams.

At Kushida Shrine, students saw one of the large decorated Yamakasa floats and visited the shrine closely connected with the history and traditions of the festival.

The fieldwork gave students an opportunity to explore examples of the creative economy, learn how cultural diversity has influenced local traditions and experience the atmosphere of Hakata during the festival season.

⚖️ Symposium on Law, Technology and Digitalization ⚖️
🗓️ July 25, 2026
📍 Ito Campus, Kyushu University

Kyushu University International Programs in Law hosted the symposium “Rethinking the Legal Boundaries of Digitalization: Law, Technology, and Governance in Emerging Contexts”.

Across two sessions on 'Rethinking Doctrinal and Conceptual Adaptation to Emerging Challenges' and 'Rethinking Responsibility and Risk Allocation', speakers discussed how law and governance are responding to recent developments in digital trade, tax administration, online content regulation, healthcare, autonomous systems, crypto-assets and artificial intelligence. Each session was followed by questions and discussions.

The symposium provided a wonderful opportunity for our alumni to return to Kyushu University, reconnect with each another, exchange views and fresh ideas with our students and faculty members. After the main event a special dinner was organized for our alumni to further reminisce about the good times at our university.

🤖 Intensive Course "Agents of the Future: AI, Governance, and Speculative Legal Design"
🎓 Dr. Freyja van den Boom, Independent Researcher and Co-founder, AI Futures Lab
🗓️ July 13-16, 2026

In this course our students were introduced to a range of contemporary issues on artificial intelligence, including AI personhood, liability and accountability, algorithmic governance, platform power and regulatory sandboxes. Different approaches to regulation of AI in Japan, the EU and other countries were also discussed.

At the end of the course students prepared and delivered their own presentations on the legal challenges in regulating artificial intelligence today.

📚 12th International IP Workshop for Junior Researchers 2026 📚
🗓️ July 19, 2026
📍 Centennial Hall, Kyushu University

Kyushu University Faculty of Law hosted the 12th International IP Workshop for Junior Researchers, a collaborative event organised on a rotating basis by the University of Tokyo, Waseda University, Nagoya University, Hokkaido University and Kyushu University.

The workshop brought together junior researchers and leading scholars in intellectual property law, giving participants an opportunity to present their ongoing research, exchange views and receive valuable feedback. Across several sessions our participants explored and discussed on contemporary issues in patent, copyright and data law, including patent enforcement, traditional cultural expressions, authorship, trade secret protection and artificial intelligence. The workshop was followed by a welcome dinner for all participants.

Kyushu University International Programs in Law is delighted to support the next generation of intellectual property researchers and to provide a platform where new ideas can be presented and challenged.

⚖️ Special Lecture on Electronic Court Proceedings
🎓 Dr. Worrawong Atcharawongchai, Presiding Judge, Central Intellectual Property and International Trade Court, Thailand

Today our students attended a special lecture “Electronic Court Proceedings in Civil and Criminal Cases: Lessons and Challenges from Thailand.”

Judge Atcharawongchai presented Thailand’s legal roadmap towards a fully electronic court system, covering electronic filing and service, digital case records, online hearings and electronic evidence. He also discussed why the balance between efficiency and procedural safeguards actually matters, especially in criminal proceedings where the defendant’s right to a fair trial is at stake.

📚 Intensive Course “Introduction to EU Technology Law”

During the course our students explored the EU legal framework on digital technologies with a focus on online consumer protection, platform regulation and artificial intelligence.

🌍 Special Lecture on European Corporate Governance 🌍
🎓 Prof. Catherine Malecki, Université Rennes 2
🗓️ July 13, 2026

Our students attended a special lecture titled “European Stakeholder Corporate Governance: Is It Asking for the Moon? French and European Perspectives.”

Prof. Malecki explained the recent developments in EU sustainable corporate governance, including corporate due diligence, sustainability reporting and the responsibilities of company directors and boards. Special attention was given to the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive and France’s Duty of Vigilance Law (Loi No. 2017-399), which both aim to hold companies more accountable for the social and environmental impact of their activities. The lecture concluded with a discussion and many interesting questions from our students.
