【福岡での桜開花！そして・・】
こんばんは、CCOsです。
今週末の福岡は暖かくとても気持ちよかったですね。
私も土曜日は朝から大好きなパン屋さん(長住にあるサイラー)へ車で行き、そのままお天気ドライブを言い訳にお買い物に行ってしまいました :P

気象台から桜の開花宣言もあり、過ごしやすい季節ですね！
その一方！
昨日の空見ましたか！？窓の空真っ白で何事かとびっくりしました。
いろんな人から、やれPM2.5だ黄砂だと聞きましたが、結局その全てだったみたいですね。
そんな中私は久々に大濠公園を一周走ってきました。
ゼェゼェなったのはきっと空気の悪さのせい、ということにしておきます。
来週には桜も満開のようで、イベントの時もお花見日和になりそうです！
31日の火曜日、お時間ありましたらまだまだ参加受付ておりますので、お気軽にご参加ください。

It was so nice and warm in Fukuoka last weekend, wasn't it?
I took the chance to drive to my favorite bakery (Sailar in Nagaoka) in the morning on Saturday, and then went shopping afterwards as an excuse for driving in the nice weather :P

Also, the meteorological Observatory (the weather people!) officially announced the blooming of the Sakura (Cherry blossoms) in Fukuoka, so it really is becoming such a pleasant season just now!

On the other hand....

Did you see the sky on Sunday!? It was so white and foggy outside my window, I was just so surprised.
Some people told me it's the PM 2.5 (air pollution), and others said it was yellow sand blown in on the seasonal winds, but it seems to be a combination of both.
Meanwhile, I went for a run in Ohori Park so I'm just going to blame the polluted air for my wheezing during the run and my flopping tongue.

Apparently the Sakura will be full in bloom by next week, so it will be a great flower viewing day for our kids event too!
You are of course more than welcome to join use if you are interested and you have some little learners, it's in Ohori park on Tuesday 31st.

【イギリス英語・アメリカ英語の違い　単語・語彙編】
みなさんこんにちはCCOsです。
前回に引き続きまたまたイギリス英語・アメリカ英語の違いです。今回は単語・語彙編をご紹介します。
これまでイギリス英語・アメリカ英語は基本的にはあまり変わらない、と言ってきましたが、この単語・語彙編は知っていないとたまに困ることがあるかもしれません！

大きく分けると二種類あります。

１つめは、同じものをいうのに全く違う単語を使うこと。
例えば、(今回もアメリカ・イギリスの順です）

サッカー：soccer/football
なすび：eggplant/aubergine
ガソリン：gasoline/petrol
くっきー：cookie/biscuit
運動靴：sneakers:trainers
お勘定：check/bill

これは単純に知らないと困るもので、人によっては勘違いされてしまうかもしれません。
やっかいなのは２つ目。
こちらは同じ単語で意味が違う、というものです。

football:アメフト/サッカー
pants:ズボン/パンツ(下着)
chips:ポテチ/フライドポテト
jelly:ジャム/ゼリー
theatre:映画館/劇場

などなど。代わりの単語は書いていませんが、気になる人はコメントで聞いてください(^^)

こんな感じで同じ物でも違う単語だったり、逆に同じ単語で違う意味を持つものが実はたくさんあって混乱してしまうかもしれません。
ネイティブの人は大体把握しているので基本的には分かってくれると思います！ただ自分が旅行したときや相手が話すときに？？となるかもしれないので使いそうな単語だけでもチェックしとくといいかもしれないですね(^^)

Following on from the last article, it’s more differences between British and American English, and I’m going to write about vocabularies today.
Although I’ve been telling you all along that there aren’t many differences between British and American English, you might still get confused if you don’t know these vocabulary differences!

There are 2 kinds of difference.

Firstly, they use different vocabulary to describe the same thing.
For example, (America, British order)

*See above again! :P

These are the vocabularies you really need to know, and often people won’t understand you if you use the wrong one.

The second one is more complicated, which is when the same vocabulary means different thing.

*See above again pleaaaase!

So it goes so on. You can always ask me below if you want to know which word people use instead :)

As you can see, there are lots of words which use different vocabulary, and also words that use the same one with different meanings, so it can be really confusing.
Native speakers will know most of the differences and will probably understand whichever you use, most of the time! However, when you travel or meet someone, you might become ???, or they might, so it’s good to check up and keep in mind which ones different people might use :)

【イギリス英語・アメリカ英語の違い　スペリング編】

みなさんこんにちはCCOsです。
前回の記事から開いてしまいましたが、イギリス・アメリカ英語の違い、スペリング編を今回はお届けいたします。

最初にお伝えしたとおり、イギリス・アメリカではなんとスペリングの違いがあります。日本ではアメリカ英語なので私もイギリスに住みだしたときは、あれ？ん？？となったのを憶えています。
こちらよく聞かれるのですが、あくまでスペルが違うだけで発音は変わりませんのでお忘れなく！

全部言い出すとキリがないので今回はその中のいくつかをご紹介したいと思います
＊最初がアメリカ式、後がイギリス式となっています

・erとre
center/centre （中心)
theater/theatre (シアター・劇場）

・orとour
color/colour (色）
flavor/flavour (香り）

・izeとise
organize/organise (組織する・整理する)
realize/realise (気づく)

・Lが１つと２つ
canceled/cancelled
traveling/travelling

・過去形の変化(こちらは発音もed/tで変わります)
learn(学ぶ)の過去　 learned/learnt
spell(スペルする)の過去　spelled/spelt

などなど！まだまだたくさんありますが今日はこの辺で。

こうなると、「えー、じゃあどっちにすればいいのー！」とか思われるかもしれませんが・・・。

どっちでもいいんです！笑

ネイティブの人はどちらでも対応してくれますので、文章を読みながら全く気にせずに読んでくれると思いますよ。ただパソコンの設定をちゃんとしておかないと、合っているのに延々とスペルミスだと赤い線で示してきます！

というわけで、今日はスペリングの違いについてご紹介しましたが、用は「どちらかに決める」ということ。混じってしまうと違和感があるので、私はこっち！と決めてさえいれば何の問題もありません。

Sorry for a gap from the previous article, but today I'm going to cover some more differences between British and American English.

As I mentioned in the beginning, there are spelling differences between British and American. I remember that when I started living in the UK, a lot of the time I was like ‘Hmm? Huh??’ because things were different from what I'd learned at school.

People have often asked me about this, but don’t forget that it is only the spelling and generally not the pronunciation, so you only need to think about it for reading and writing in English, not speaking.

There are too many of them to show them all so I’m going to show you some of the obvious ones.

*See above! American and British in order.

Etcetera etcetera... There’s so many more but I’ll stop it here.

So when it comes to stuff like this, you might think ‘So which one should I use!!!’, but....

IT DOESN’T MATTER!

Native speakers will understand whichever you use, and just read it through anyway. However, don’t forget to set your computer, or it will keep reminding you that your spelling is wrong with the red underline forever!

With the spelling differences I've shown today, the important thing is to ‘pick one’! When you mix both of them, it looks very strange, so if you use 'Color,' then you have to use 'Theater' and 'Organize' too. But as long as you stick to one of them there will be no problem.

今日は先日に引き続きアメリカ英語・イギリス英語の違いについてご説明したいと思います。

今日は1つ目の項目、「アクセントと発音」です。

まずイギリス/アメリカに関わらず、最初に人とお話してわかる違いはここですね。文字にして表すのは難しいのですが、アメリカの方が単語と単語を繋げて発音したり、母音のを巻き舌っぽかったりします。これを英語では「Rolling American」と言います。
そしてイギリス英語の方は、一語ずつがハッキリとしている傾向があります。こちらは「Clipped British」と言います。
個人的にはTの発音の差が一番分かりやすいと思っております。

百聞は一見に如かず、と言うことで下に即席ビデオを載せてるのでよろしければご覧下さい！（そして笑ってください！）
(ちなみに私の話す英語もだいぶんイギリス英語です)

ただ注意してほしいのは、これは私の独断と偏見による意見で、人によってはまた違う風に感じていると思うでそこはお忘れなく！そしてなによりイギリスアメリカ、どちらも地域によってはまったく変わってきます。今回はいわゆる標準語的なものの違いとして書かせていただいています。

Following the post from yesterday, I am going to describe the difference between American and British English.

I'm going to write about 'the accent and the pronunciation' as the first topic today.

First of all, those are the differences you realise instantly when you speak to anyone, regardless of where they are from. It is quite difficult to describe it in words, but Americans seems to connect between words, roll their tongue when they pronounce vowels. This is called 'Rolling America'.
On the other hand, British tend to pronounce each words separately, also know as 'Clipped British'.
Personally, I found the pronunciation of 'T' make a big difference between two.

As it says, 'Seeing is believing', we attached a little video below, so you can have a look if you like! (and laugh!)
(By the way, my spoken English also sounds quite British too!)

To be noted, there are only my personal opinion and don't forget that many people feel in many different ways! On top of that, either in America or the UK, there are huge differences depending on whey they are from. For this time, I only wrote the differences between their 'standard'English.

今日は先日友人から質問があった「イギリス英語とアメリカ英語の違いって何？」というものに簡単にですがお答えしたいと思います！

こちらの質問実際よく聞かれ、不安になる方もいらっしゃるのですが、そもそも同じ言語ですからはっきり言って基本的には同じです！つまり文法・文の作り方は同じなので、あまり気にする必要はないのです！ただまあ細々とした違いがあるので、今回は大きく以下３つにまとめてみました。

・アクセントと発音
・スペリング
・言葉の選び方

詳しいことは長くなるので明日以降小分けして書いていきたいと思います！

I was asked by my friend the other day "What are the differences between British and American English?" So I'm going to try to answer this in a very simple way!

Actually, this question has often been asked as something people are worried about, but they are essentially the same, since they are basically the same languages. What I mean is that the grammar and the construction of the sentences are same, so you don't need to worry about that! However, there are a few small differences, which I divided into following 3 categories for now.

-Accents and pronunciations
-Spellings
-Choices of vocabularies

It's going to be quite long, so I will write more the details about each categories from tomorrow!

こんにちは。Chit Chat Owlsです。
これから英語に関する豆知識(トレヴィア)を題して"Did you know...?"コーナーとして紹介したいと思います！この名前の由来なんですが、大学時代の自慢好きな友人(Kieran含む)がよく"Did you know..."と良く「これ知ってた？」とよく分からない知識自慢をしあっていたからです笑

第一回の本日は昨日のレッスンで出たこちら"golf"！！
皆さんも良く知っているスポーツのゴルフですが、この語源、なんだか知っていますか？

ゴルフはスコットランド発祥で、当時ゴルフコースにたてられていたサインを作る際に書かれてたのが、、、

Gentlemen (男性)
Only (オンリー)
Ladies (女性)
Forbidden (禁止)

知っていましたか？と、いっても実ははきっりしていなくて、一説にすぎないそうですが・・・。でも実際に当時は女性はプレイ出来なかったわけですから納得出来ちゃいますよね笑

こんな感じでちょっとした、いらない知識もちょこちょこご紹介していくので次回もお楽しみに〜

So we are going to share with you some trivia, our so called "Did you know...?" corner! The reason for this name is because when I was at university, my show-off friends (including Kieran!) often started conversations with "Did you know..." and then tried to show off their knowledge to each other. ;)

So, the first topic is "golf"!! As you probably know, a type of sport. But did you know the origin of the word "golf"?

Golf was invented in Scotland, and when they would make a golf course they would put a sign up on the course that said...

Did you know that!? Well, it is actually not 100% clear where the word golf comes from, and it is only one of the ideas, but it's definitely true that women weren't allowed to play golf at the time, so it is kind of convincing, isn't it?

おはようございます。Chit Chat Owls Cafeにご参加いただいた皆さん、昨日はありがとうございました！最終的にキャンセルもあって参加者は3名(藤田さんお写真一緒に撮れなくてごめんなさい！)と小規模だったのですが、皆さんとたくさんお話できてとても楽しかったです！

今回は、自己紹介から始まり、イギリスの事を紹介、そしていろいろなお店なんかのオススメの仕方なんかをご紹介しました。みなさん色々な所をご存知で、今回聞いた場所もぜひ行ってみたいと思います(^^)

そして最後になりましたが、場所を提供して下さったtreneさん、本当ありがとうございます！ご飯もとっても美味しくて楽しくレッスン出来ました。ありがとうございました。

Good morning. Thank you everyone who came and joined the Chit Chat Owls Cafe last night. We had some cancelations so only 3 students to begin with (Sorry Fujita san for not being able to take a picture together!), but we still had lots of good conversations and a great time!

We started with simple introductions to one another, to the UK and also talked a bit about how to recommend places as well. Everyone knew lots of different places and I would love to try some of them :)

Lastly, thank you Trene for letting us use the space! The food was great and we had such a good time. Really appreciate it.

Hello, this is Kieran (Owl no. 2, English Owl) and I thought I'd follow up Izumi's post with a little one of my own.
*Kieranは日本語勉強中のため、JP ver.は私が下に書いてます！

I'm 29 years old, British, and I come originally from Portsmouth, on the South coast of England. I studied Creative Writing and English Literature at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, graduating in 2012. After graduation I decided to come to Japan and since July 2014 I have been living here permanently. I now live in Kurume City and work full-time as an English teacher in a junior high school and an elementary school. It's hard work, but I love it and I get to spend every weekend in Fukuoka exploring all the amazing foodie stuff the city has to offer. I especially love finding interesting places to drink coffee and beer and I'll always enjoy them with a good book if I get the chance! I still enjoy writing, and have written a lot of articles about films and books for various websites, as well as keeping up with personal projects.

I'm slowly improving my Japanese but it's still not very good! I've been helping out in Izumi's weekend lessons and I'm very excited to work with CCOs too. It's a great way to meet new people and share stories about life in the city and cool places to go. So I hope we can just have fun with it and make sure everybody gets as much out of it as possible. こんにちは、フクロウ２号のKieran(キーラン)です。Izumiに続いて今度は私自身のことについて少しご紹介したいと思います。

私はイングランド州の南海岸のポーツマスという所からきた、２９歳のイギリス人です。ノーリッチにあるイーストアングリア大学で英文学と創作作文(小説などを書くコースのことです)を学び、2012年に卒業しました。卒業後日本に来ることを決め、2014年の7月から住んでいます。今は久留米市に住んでおり、フルタイムの英語の教師として小中学校で教えています。大変ではありますが、とても楽しんでおり、毎週末には福岡ですばらしい食べ物などを探したりしています！特に、コーヒーやビールが飲める面白い場所を探すのが好きで、いつも隙があれば本を読みながら一緒に楽しんでいます！書くことは今も好きで、映画や本についての記事をウェブサイトに書いたり、個人的な創作もしています。

日本語は少しずつ上達していますがまだあまり上手ではありません！Izumiの週末のレッスンなどを手伝っていて、今回CCOsとして働けてとてもドキドキしています。新しい人と出会い、様々な人生の話や、福岡のクールな場所などをシェアできる素敵な方法だと思います。皆さんがそれを楽しめ、そこから多くのことを得られるように願っています。新しい冒険を楽しみにしています。

こんにちは、Chit Chat Owls (CCOs) のいづみです。今日は予告通り自己紹介をと英語を教えるようになった経緯を少しお伝えします。
そして今回から英語ver.も下にアップしますのでぜひチェックしてください♡

フクロウ１号、いづみ。福岡生まれ、福岡育ちで普通の公立中学私立高校卒の25歳です。18歳で渡英し、Norwichでの大学３年を含め4年半をイギリスで過ごしました。
好きな事は何よりも食べること♡食べるのはもちろん、作ったり、写真を見たりするのも好きです。旅行も好きなのですが醍醐味はもちろんご当地の食べ物！
あとは寝ることとフクロウ(^O^)そのうちフクロウについての記事も…♡
それから、やっぱり英語とおしゃべりですね。色んな文化背景の人やステキでおもしろい人と出会えることこそが、多言語を学ぶ一番の醍醐味だと思います！

Hello, this is Izumi from Chit Chat Owls, as I mentioned, I wanted to introduce myself today and say a little bit about how I became an English teacher.

So, Izumi (Owl no. 1); I'm 25 years old and was born and raised in Fukuoka, with all the usual Junior High and High School stuff. When I was 18 I moved to the UK, and I spent 4 and half years there, including 3 years in Norwich getting my degree at The University of East Anglia (a top university, and a cool place too :D).
My favourite thing to do is EATING ♡ Not only eating interesting food, but also cooking and looking at it too. Travelling is always good but eating the local food is the best part of it for me.
I also like sleeping (ha ha) and owls too :) Maybe I'll write a post about owls one day...
And of course, I love teaching English and chatting!
What I really I love about it is the chance for cultural exchange with people from different cultural backgrounds, meeting interesting people is definitely the best part of knowing another language!

So that's it for today.

今日は私たちのこの名前の由来をご紹介しようと思います。

まずは'owl'なのですが、これはプロフィール写真にもあるようにフクロウ好きだからです！笑 's'が付いて複数なのにはフクロウ1号である私Izumiと2号Kisranがいるからです！自己紹介はまた次回したいと思います。
'chit chat'もしくは'chitchat'。一語でも二語でもどちらでもokなのですが、これには気軽な会話、雑談、世間話、ゴシップなんて言う意味合いがあります。CCOs (Chit Chat Owls)ではそんな気楽な気持ちで皆さんに楽しく英会話を楽しんで頂けたら、という思いを込めてつけました。
あとは単純に響きとCCOの並びが可愛かったから♡笑
