角（かど）が立（た）つ — kado ga tatsu — literally means “the corners stand out.” It describes situations where blunt or overly direct words create tension or strain a relationship. Imagine a smooth conversation suddenly growing sharp edges.

Example:
あまりストレートに言うと角が立つから、言い方を少し考えたほうがいいよ。

“If you say it too directly, it might cause tension, so you should think more carefully about how you phrase it.”

Honesty is important — but in Japanese culture, how you say something can matter just as much as what you say.

🐧☁️ Japanese Idiom of the Day: 雲泥の差 (undei no sa) ☁️🐧

Literally "the difference between clouds and mud" — used to describe a huge gap or stark contrast between two things. ☁️ vs. 🟤
Clouds float high in the sky, mud sits low on the ground… so when two things are this far apart, they're 雲泥の差!

Example:
最新モデルのスマートフォンと10年前のモデルには雲泥の差がある。
→ "There's a huge difference between the latest smartphone model and one from ten years ago."

🇯🇵 Showa Day (昭和の日) — the start of Japan's Golden Week! 🌿✨

Every April 29th, Japan observes Showa Day, a national holiday honoring Emperor Showa (Hirohito), who reigned from 1926 to 1989. It's a day to reflect on the Showa era — a turbulent but transformative time of war, recovery, and Japan's rise as a modern nation. 📺📞🗾

Fun fact: this holiday has had three names! It was originally Emperor Showa's birthday, then renamed Greenery Day after his passing in 1989 (a nod to his love of nature 🌱), and finally became Showa Day in 2007 — while Greenery Day was moved to May 4th. 📅

Showa Day also kicks off Golden Week (ゴールデンウィーク), a string of four national holidays packed into late April and early May:

🗓 Constitution Memorial Day (5/3)
🗓 Greenery Day (5/4)
🗓 Children's Day (5/5)

🌸 Shunbun no Hi (春分の日) — Japan's Vernal Equinox Day 🌸

Every year around March 20th or 21st, Japan celebrates the moment when day and night stand almost perfectly equal — the official transition from winter into spring. ☀️🌙

Rooted in Shinto and Buddhist traditions, Shunbun no Hi became a national holiday in 1948 as a day to honor nature and all living beings. 🌿✨ It also falls in the middle of the Buddhist Higan period, when many families visit ancestral graves to clean them and offer flowers or incense. 🪷

A seasonal treat you might spot? Botamochi (牡丹餅) — sweet rice cakes covered in red bean paste, named after the spring peony flower. 🌺🍡 But for many people in Japan, it's simply a peaceful day off to enjoy the arrival of spring.

🤍 White Day (ホワイトデー) — Japan's sweet sequel to Valentine's Day! 🤍

Every year on March 14th, exactly one month after Valentine's Day, Japan celebrates White Day. The tradition flips the script: on February 14th, women give chocolates to the men in their lives — and on White Day, men return the favor with candies, cookies, marshmallows, jewelry, or other thoughtful gifts. 🍬🍪💍
Born in the 1980s thanks to Japanese confectionery companies, the custom has since spread to South Korea and Taiwan, each with their own twist. And it's not just for couples — friends, classmates, and even coworkers exchange gifts too! 🎁
