As a freelancer I spend as much time collaborating with other coaches and trainers as I do collaborating with clients, partners, and sponsors.
One of the first steps in any collaboration is small talk - the key to discovering commonalities, identifying shared goals and building understanding with each other. Small talk also helps us to learn about how respect is shown, and given, as what is determined to be "respectful" can vary greatly between cultures.

Over the summer I cut off 40cm of my hair and donated it to Japan Hair Donation & Charity, an organization that creates wigs for children who lose their hair due to medical conditions. Money is important, but in this case, it can’t replace the basic resource: healthy hair.

One of the things I enjoy when working in the city is finding an Urban Oasis - a space with greenery nestled in among the the gray buildings.
Even on a rainy day like today an oasis provides a space to rest, to shrug off the commute and get into the right mindset for the work ahead.

In trainings focused on working globally we often talk about how values connect to our behaviors.

Values —> Mindset —> Behavior

Identifying your own values can help you to recognize the values that others hold - not coming from a point of judgement but from a point of discovering ways we can happily work together.

On this day I value being on time, being calm, and not being too hot.
My mindset & behaviors include arriving early, enjoying a peaceful outdoor space, and walking slowly so I show up in a calm state, ready for the day.

Tokyo today is a very humid mid-80s so staying cool isn’t going to happen - but I can aim for less hot?!

This time of year the most commonly requested session is the 3 part Choosing Schools Program. Choosing Schools is a combination of consulting and coaching. These sessions are not about which school is ranked “the best”; they focus on helping you to identify what is most important to you when looking at school options to find the best fit for your child and family.

Program Overview:
Session 1: An overview of the school system in Japan & discussion of the ideal school
Session 2: Discussion of the homework worksheet results from the first session and ways to identify realistic school options.
Session 3: Co-create a timeline and identify starting points and deal breakers

Sessions last 45 minutes and are held online on Zoom or Google Meet.

Supporting Women Around The World

This morning I was thinking about the past few years of coaching and all the people I've been blessed to work with. Most of them are women, all are trying to figure out what is the best way to approach their current stage in life, while also preparing for the next stage.

Today is an opportunity to take a step back, to reflect, and to think about what we can do to support the women around us, and by extension help make the world a better place for us all.

I am able to do the work I do because I've had the support and encouragement of women around me who see possibilities, point out realities, and share their experiences. I will be forever grateful to each of them.
It is also because the men around me try to understand and help negate the challenges of living and working in a culture that continues to rank at the bottom of indexes measuring working conditions for women. Their support is a key part of making a lasting difference that we will all benefit from.
