Around the World in Eighty Days
by Jules Verne

The story, set in 1873 CE, is about an Englishman, Mr Phileas Fogg, who is trying to complete a journey around the world in eighty days. At this point in the story, he and his travelling companion, the Frenchman Mr Passepartout, are travelling through India by train. They have befriended another traveller, Sir Francis Cromarty.

القصة، التي تدور أحداثها عام 1873م، تحكي عن إنجليزي يُدعى فيلياس فوج، يحاول أن يُتم رحلة حول العالم في ثمانين يومًا. وفي هذه المرحلة من الرواية، كان يسافر مع رفيقه الفرنسي باسبرتو عبر الهند بالقطار، وقد تعرّفا على مسافر آخر هو السير فرانسيس كرومارتي.

The train stopped at eight o’clock, in the midst of a glade some fifteen miles beyond Rothal, where there were several bungalows and workmen’s cabins. The conductor, passing along the carriages, shouted, “Passengers will get out here!”

توقف القطار عند الساعة الثامنة، في فسحة وسط غابة تبعد خمسة عشر ميلًا عن "روثال"، حيث كانت هناك عدة بيوت صغيرة (بنغالو) وأكواخ للعمال. مرّ المراقب على العربات وهو ينادي: "على الركاب أن ينزلوا هنا!"

“Where are we?” asked Sir Francis.
“At the hamlet of Kholby.”
“Do we stop here?”
“Certainly. The railway isn’t finished.”
“What! Not finished?”

سأل السير فرانسيس: "أين نحن؟"
أجاب: "في قرية صغيرة تُدعى كولبي."
قال السير فرانسيس: "وهل نتوقف هنا؟"
رد المراقب: "بالتأكيد. فالسكة الحديدية لم تُستكمل بعد."
"ماذا! لم تُستكمل؟"

“No. There’s still a matter of fifty miles to be laid from here to Allahabad, where the line begins again.”
“Yet you sell tickets from Bombay to Calcutta,” retorted Sir Francis, who was growing warm.
“No doubt,” replied the conductor, “but the passengers know that they must provide means of transportation for themselves from Kholby to Allahabad.”

"نعم. ما زال هناك خمسون ميلًا يجب مدّها حتى نصل إلى الله آباد، حيث يبدأ الخط مجددًا."
قال السير فرانسيس بغضب: "ومع ذلك تبيعون تذاكر من بومباي إلى كالكوتا!"

“Sir Francis,” said Mr Fogg quietly, “we will, if you please, look about for some means of conveyance to Allahabad.”
“Mr Fogg, this is a delay greatly to your disadvantage.”
“No, Sir Francis; it was foreseen.”

قال فوج بهدوء: "سير فرانسيس، فلنبحث عن وسيلة نقل إلى الله آباد."
رد السير فرانسيس: "يا سيد فوج، هذا التأخير سيضرّك كثيرًا."
قال فوج بثقة: "لا يا سير فرانسيس؛ لقد توقعت ذلك."
“What! You knew that the way—”
“Not at all, but I knew that some obstacle or other would sooner or later arise on my route. Nothing, therefore, is lost. I have two gained days to sacrifice. A steamer leaves Calcutta for Hong Kong at noon, on the 25ᵗʰ. This is the 22ⁿᵈ, and we shall reach Calcutta in time.”

قال السير فرانسيس بدهشة: "ماذا! كنت تعلم أن الطريق—"
أجاب فوج: "أبدًا، لكنني كنت أعلم أن عقبة ما ستظهر عاجلًا أو آجلًا في طريقي. لذلك لم يُفقد شيء. لدي يومان فائضان يمكنني التضحية بهما. هناك باخرة ستغادر كالكوتا إلى هونغ كونغ ظهر يوم الخامس والعشرين. اليوم هو الثاني والعشرون، وسنصل إلى كالكوتا في الوقت المناسب."

There was nothing to say to so confident a response.
Mr Fogg and Sir Francis Cromarty, after searching the village from end to end, came back without having found anything.
“I shall go afoot,” said Phileas Fogg.

لم يكن هناك ما يُقال أمام هذا الرد الواثق.
بحث فوج وكرومارتي في القرية كلها، لكنهما لم يجدا شيئًا.
قال فوج: "سأمشي على قدمي."

Passepartout, who had now rejoined his master, made a wry grimace, as he thought of his magnificent, but too frail Indian shoes. After a moment’s hesitation, he said, “Monsieur, I think I have found a means of conveyance.”
“What?”
“An elephant! An elephant that belongs to an Indian who lives but a hundred steps from here.”
“Let’s go and see the elephant,” replied Mr Fogg.

أما باسبرتو، الذي عاد إلى سيده، فقد ارتسمت على وجهه grimace وهو يفكر في حذائه الهندي الجميل لكنه هشّ للغاية. وبعد لحظة تردد قال: "سيدي، أظن أنني وجدت وسيلة نقل."
"ما هي؟"
"فيل! فيل يملكه رجل هندي يسكن على بُعد مئة خطوة من هنا."
قال فوج: "لنذهب ونرى الفيل."

They soon reached a small hut. Enclosed within some high palings, was the animal in question. An Indian came out of the hut, and, at their request, conducted them within the enclosure. The elephant, which was reared, not to be an animal that merely carried things around, but for warlike purposes, was half-domesticated. Happily, however, for Mr Fogg, the animal’s instruction in this direction had not gone far, and the elephant still preserved its natural gentleness. Kiouni – this was the name of the elephant – could doubtless travel rapidly for a long time, and, in default of any other means of conveyance, Mr Fogg resolved to hire him.

وصلوا إلى كوخ صغير، وكان الحيوان محاطًا بسياج مرتفع. خرج الهندي من الكوخ، وبناءً على طلبهم، أدخلهم إلى الحظيرة. كان الفيل قد رُبّي لا ليكون مجرد حيوان للحمل، بل لأغراض حربية، وكان نصف مُستأنس. ولحسن حظ فوج، لم يكتمل تدريبه الحربي بعد، فظل محتفظًا بطبيعته الودودة. كان اسمه "كيوني"، وكان قادرًا بلا شك على السفر بسرعة لمسافات طويلة، ولذلك قرر فوج استئجاره.
However, elephants are far from being cheap in India as they are becoming scarce. Male elephants, as they are only suitable for circus shows, are much sought after especially as the majority are domesticated. When therefore Mr Fogg proposed to the Indian to hire Kiouni, he refused point-blank. Mr Fogg persisted, offering the excessive sum of ten pounds an hour for the loan of the elephant to Allahabad. Refused. Twenty pounds? Refused also. Forty pounds? Still refused.

لكن الفيلة في الهند ليست رخيصة، إذ أصبحت نادرة. والفيلة الذكور، لأنها تصلح للعروض، مطلوبة بشدة. لذلك عندما عرض فوج استئجار كيوني، رفض الهندي رفضًا قاطعًا. أصر فوج، وعرض عشرة جنيهات في الساعة مقابل استعارته حتى الله آباد. رفض. عشرون؟ رفض أيضًا. أربعون؟ ما زال الرفض قائمًا.

Phileas Fogg, without getting in the least flurried, then proposed to purchase the animal outright, and at first offered a thousand pounds for him. The Indian, perhaps thinking he was going to make a great bargain, still refused. At two thousand pounds the Indian yielded. “What a price, good heavens!” cried Passepartout, “for an elephant.”

عندها عرض فوج شراء الفيل مباشرة، فبدأ بألف جنيه. رفض الهندي. وعندما رفع السعر إلى ألفي جنيه، وافق أخيرًا. صرخ باسبرتو: "يا للسماء! أي ثمن هذا لفيل!"

It only remained now to find a guide, which was comparatively easy. A young Parsee, with an intelligent face, offered his services, which Mr Fogg accepted, promising so generous a reward as to materially stimulate his zeal. The elephant was led out and equipped. Provisions were purchased at Kholby, and, while Sir Francis and Mr Fogg took the howdahs on either—

لم يبقَ سوى العثور على دليل، وكان ذلك سهلًا نسبيًا. تقدم شاب بارسي ذو وجه ذكي، فعرض خدماته، فقبله فوج ووعده بمكافأة سخية تُحفّزه على بذل الجهد. أُخرج الفيل وجهّز، واشتروا المؤن من كولبي، بينما جلس السير فرانسيس وفوج في الهودج على جانبي الحيوان.

Passepartout was perched astride a saddle-cloth, while the Parsee took his place on the elephant’s neck. At nine o’clock they left the village, and entered the dense forest of palms by the shortest route.

جلس باسبرتو على قطعة قماش تُستخدم كسرج، بينما جلس البارسي على عنق الفيل. وعند الساعة التاسعة غادروا القرية، ودخلوا الغابة الكثيفة المليئة بأشجار النخيل عبر أقصر الطرق.
