Lycopene is a red carotenoid abundant in tomatoes, watermelon, grapefruit, papaya, apricot, and asparagus (Khaksar and Jahromi, 2016). It is one of the most potent antioxidants found in the human body, being the most potent among the different carotenoids (Imran et al., 2020) and having about 100 times antioxidant potency compared to vitamins E and C, 10 times that of α-tocopherol, and 125 times of glutathione (Kumar et al., 2017). In addition, it exhibits strong anti-inflammatory and cognitive-enhancing effects and has blood-brain barrier permeability; thus, it can diffuse into the brain, lowering the risk of neurodegenerative diseases (Erten, 2021). These properties make lycopene a promising neuroprotective agent capable of improving learning, memory, and potentially countering neurodegenerative processes (Varesi et al., 2023). Therefore, we hypothesize that lycopene might provide benefits for patients with autism.
