Old Dominion University Baja is a group of Undergraduate and Graduate students working together to design, fabricate, and race an off-road Mini-Baja car in international competitions.
Baja SAE consists of three regional competitions that simulate real-world engineering design projects and their related challenges. Students are tasked to design and build an off-road vehicle that will survive the severe punishment of rough terrain including rocks, jumps, and mud. The students then must compete against other teams from around the globe in both static an dynamic events.
All vehicles are powered by a ten-horsepower OHV Vanguard Model 19 engine sold by Briggs & Stratton Corporation. For over thirty years, Briggs & Stratton has been the sole provider of Baja SAE racing engines. Use of the same engine by all the teams makes the the design and optimization of other subsystems much more critical to success.
The object of the competition is to provide SAE student members with a challenging project that develops planning, designing, and manufacturing skills similar to those found in the engineering field. Students must function as a team to design, build, and race a vehicle within the limits of the rules, and also to generate financial support for their project. Students also learn how to manage their educational priorities with support from their team members.
